My moms company is cleaning out some "old" hardware (like 24port switches =)))

one of the things i got was this "broken" PC. its a Silicon Graphic 320 workstation

It's "broken" since the display doens't show a picture (orange standby light doesn't turn green)

Now, I want to figure out if its the graphiccard, the TFT.. the cable or whatever, the only problem is, that the hardware is a little different from the ordinary PC:

what u see behind the rear-fan is the graphiccard (or at least part of it). It doenst have the standart VGA connection, neither the standart digital TFT connection.. but this odd coustom thing.

thats another (crapy) pic (its left of the .. odd RAM and IDE connection)

so... i just wanted to connect some old 2mb PCI graphiccard ...

    but:

i guessed pci-32 & pci-64... though just why is the PCI-slot the wrong way around????

and thats my main question: what kinda slot is that? .... and what is it for??

i'ld be very gratefull if anyone could answer that question for me =)

I'm fairly sure that the only thing that slot can be is 64bit PCI.

The backwards PCI slot is probally an Advanced Communication Riser (ACR) slot.

Nothing, you could buy a modem for it if you wanted to...

...as for the TFT, Mashie has one, you can get a little box to convert its input to a normal VGA cable, I'm sure google will help you out ;)

@jack_ .. i have NO idea ;) one page i googled said 128 ECC-SDRAM, but that page also said dual-PII-350 and the one i got has dual-PII-500

    ... no idea

    @cheese

    this?? http://www.sgi.com/peripherals/displays/multilink/

    or something different (cheap??)

    ------------

modem.. hm.. got DSL =) and it's got pretty much everything onboard! (firewire, sound, s-video in and out, composide video in/out, also (dont know english word, they look like this [IMG] for sound-in and out.. just kinda luxury!

    another question:

the big slot (pci-64??), the one with the card in it, any chance i can get a graphic card for that? there's another free slot just unterneath the card

    ------

or.. well.. thnx to u, i at least know i can use the display for something! but what about the rest of the PC? just a pile of 4 year old $12000 hardwaregarbage? or any of you know anything how i can get a (normal?) graphiccard in there?

    nifty case

and on a side note, it'd probably run farely well if it worked.... no idea what OS SGI systems use though.... but I bet you'd be surprised at what it could do

    and PII 500??????

was pretty sure PII stopped at 450 where there's PII/PIII variants...

I'll check that again, but i'm pretty sure it said 500/512/something (mhz/L2/... ?)

i guess i'ld wanna run it as Gameserver on LANs for example... dualPII is still more than enough for HL or UT or sorts.

... but i need some graphics first :)

dual 500 mhz is enough for anthing ... a 32 player counterstrike server with 20 plugins might just use it all

have you tried all the usual checks for a non-booting system ?

well the problem is, that i don't even know if it boots. no speaker, didn't find anywhere to connect a speaker. there seems to be some HDD activity, but i don't know if its the normal power-on thing.. but i THINK its more than that.

i got it connected and running, and i'll do a LANguard networkscan over the night. (when connected to switch, the switch-lights are on for connection).. though i dont know what ip it can be... so i'm scanning 192.168.0.1 - .255.255 to see if it's completly booted (though don't know if anything will show up if its booted, but on some errormessage.. =( )

the reset-button works... at least the cd-rom makes this "regrab tray" kinda noise...

    any advice?

BTW: i gotta admit, i was kinda.... blind. it DOES have a standart VGA connection onboard, but i overlooked it, assuming it was COM2. buuuut it doen't show anything either.

main problem is lack of speaker =( just sooome kinda beeping would really help me out =(

ps: didn't check what SCSI card it is.. probably because i have no idea what is good with SCSI anyway =P but i'll check tomorrow if scan doens't show anything when i can turn PC of

I looked around on sgi's site, and found: this, the users manual. in troubleshooting, there is a thing about the power LED blinking, this may be of help...
