Bit of an odd one this.....

i used to have 16GB ram im my system but i took 8 GB out to put in 2 other systems.

now its all back in my main rig but for some reason in the bios, task manager and windows its only showing 8GB?

    in CPUZ it shows 16GB.

i can run 8GB in the different DIMM slots no problem and it picked up all 4 sticks all be it 2 at a time, if i put all 4 in its shows 8GB :/

    any ideas?

So if you put them in A1 and B1, they work together. When in A2 and B2, they work together as well, but not all at the same time? Is that correct?

    Hmm. How very strange.

What if you put modules in A1, B1 and A2, three instead of four. Does it then show all three as being recognised?

Unfortunately, this is looking a lot like a CPU problem. :(

If it is, you can try removing it from the socket, cleaning the contacts on the CPU and reinstalling it. Otherwise, you may have to RMA it (when did you buy it?).

Yes tried that and still shows 8GB not 12GB

I do think it has a weak memory controller but ive ran 16GB before unless ive not realised till now??

Are all four sticks correctly initialised within your BIOS?

It could be that Windows has decided to allocate 8GB and no more.

Go to Start and type in msconfig. Go to the Boot tab and then click on Advanced Settings (or similar) and set the maximum memory to 16384MB. Save and reboot. See if it then picks up all of your RAM.

If you notice it becomes very slowly, I've noticed Windows sometimes glitches out and decides to allocate nearly no RAM so your SSD/HDD is being absolutely battered with pagefile swaps.

If it's only 8GB in the BIOS as well, then I think there's an issue with your CPU. That's what it points to for me anyway.

When did you purchase the 3770K?

The thing is, as I understand, it was working before. That's the bit that baffles me.

have you tried reseating the cpu, since you have been messing inside anyway, you may have knocked the cpu cooler
