anyone know how to power a CD-Rom drive without connecting it to a mother board, ie just a power supply and a Drive.
Just plug it into the molex and it'll work by itself - the MoBo just gives it something to do, not actually control the mechanism for opening/closing... Welcome to the boards btw.
I@ve done this a few times now watch out i've got some big cups and they just snap the draw off and you get about half a gallon of hot coffee all over you lol
mod the tray so that when it comed out, it had an expanding cup holder, kinda like the ones on those chairs that come in a bag. and ya, reinforce it so it can hold your biggest cup.
molex connecting it strait to the molex does not work, I tried it. If it does then I don't know what happened. Let me know if I'm just a moron.
for the longest time i've thought about doign this.. i'll use some small almuminum or steel rods for support and some sort of device to hold the cup in there..also i still have my cd rom hooked up to my mobo, its just wont read cd's anymore
Stick one end of a short length of wire into any of the slots that have a black wire Stick the other end of said wire into the slot leading to the green wire [/list=1]
That is to turn the PSU on, if it is on already, it still may not work, Neither of my drives will open or close with just the power connection.
thats wierd all of my 20 gazillion open without and IDE connected to the mobo... maybe yours is broke
I had one laying around here aswell... tried to power it up... nope! doesn't open with only power... (the drive is OLD though....) but i think it still works... hmmm... it is REALLY old... it don't even have a IDE connection... id have a 34 pin connector... anyone know what it's called? it's the old thype that you had to connect to the old soundblaster 16 cards...
wow, what happen to the good ol' days when you put the cup on the table brings to mind those horror tech stories, cup holder is broken, floppy drive would not read credit card, etc. etc.
Alternatively of course, you could use the emergency eject hole on the CDROM. Most CDROM's should have a small hole in the front of them; just straighten a paperclip out and shove it in there. The drive doesn't even need to be powered up, it'll still open the drawer. Of course, it's a bit ghetto, and a pain in the ass not to be able to use the button, but hey, if nothing else works
I remember those, cant remember the interface name though. I think Pioneer used to make on of the popular models.
