So I'm looking to upgrade my slightly over clocked 5850. Been looking mainly at the r9 280x but wondering if there's a big difference in really world performance. Over the 280. Or am I missing a bargain with the nvidia equivalent?

Will mantel be worth it in end over nvidia's thing with certain games (more snow in batman...).

Ahh, the 5850. A really good card!

I'd go for the 280X as you can get one from Scan for around 190 quid. It performs quite a bit better than the 280 or the 760. However, if you scrape together a little change and don't eat for a day or two you could go for a 770 (about 225 quid on Scan). Then you get better performance AND more snow in Batman!

By the way, I'm assuming you're gaming at 1080p. If you play at a higher res you need more than 2GB VRAM.

If you've lasted this long I would have a look to see when the next round is coming. There was a spate of 280x's for 140 iirc.

    Isn't the 280X just a 7970?

Maybe as a stop gap pick up a 2nd hand one of them, they go for peanuts and youd prob get £50 for your 5850 still.

7970 would run rings round a 5850 btw

Any idea when next crop of cards are out? I love my 5850, it's a pre oc power colour one but it has the unstable over clock so it's notched back 20mHz or so.

It's just starting to show it's age now...

My guess would be winter holidays/jan time.. Considering they've released the 750, and these new ones are going to be a new revision of the architecture (from what i've read about the place)

The 880 is due to be announced in September, so maybe Octoberish for 880/870 and November/Decemberish for an 860. Mind you, the 870 will probably be ~300 quid and the 760 ~230 quid.

second hand 7970 - and sadly you wont get £50 for the 5850 now tbh - 5870`s struggle to get that

Meant when new ones are being announced? To be honest I am prob going to keep the 5850, underclock it to reduce noise and use it in a media pc I think. Not fully decided yet.

If that is your intention, I would personally flog it for whatever it's worth and buy a low profile, passive GPU.

I'm actually in a similar position (5850 here) and am contemplating an upgrade at some point but it plays most of what I want on full/almost full eye candy so will probably wait a bit more.

I'd have to leap at lysaer's offer! You'll just have to judge if you're willing to put up with a noisier card than the 5850. Bit of an unfair comparison IMHO as the 5850 was probably the most quiet GPU I can remember.
