    Hi,

I'm looking for a new modem router to replace the D-Link DSL-2730E I have. I would like a modem which has great range and must support OpenDNS. Can anyone recommend me few models?

Any router you can change the DNS servers on will support OpenDNS for DNS lookup (& filtering if you've got a static IP)

So it does not have to be a new router? This current modem router I have does not allow me to do so.

In the DHCP server you can change the DNS servers the router issues in there to OpenDNS ones

There is no way I can change the DNS server on the modem. It just says:
    DHCP Server: Enable

DNSBench is a useful tool for identifying DNS Servers with the best performance. It takes a while to run it the first time but after that it's just a few minutes.

My modem does not have the advance tab onwards as shown in the manual. I think it is because it was provided by the ISP. I guess I will need to get a new modem after all.

Did that. However I cannot control for guest computers login in to the network. That is why I prefer at router level filtering.

Guest machines should be connected to a separate network and nowhere near your regular network

Most router allows this, if it's not in DHCP server section look in WAN settings.

If you really want to buy a new router, I highly recommend Asus routers. They are well built, with a fantastic firmware. The firmware definitely allows you to change DNS server and set up dynamic IP.

Alternatively use Asus firmware's parental control settings. It's got filters similar to OpenDNS.

I already have a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 router which I think can provide special requirements for guest connection

I only need a modem as I have the R7000 which I just bought few months back.

If the DSL-2730E supports DD-WRT, I would have flashed it.

If you've got a router then apply the DNS settings there and not at the modem (assuming the system is setup correctly)

Even if you set up your router to use opendns, clients can still use whatever they want. DNS filtering only works if you have control of the end machine.

I can control the machines in my institution. Unless they sideload software which they downloaded somewhere else, then that is another problem. I would however remove all risk from my side
