I used to use Clean Master for both my phone and tablet but it has become both progressively more bloated and aggressive in it's advertising and promotions.

What do other people use? Any recommendations?

I don't mind spending a couple of quid as long as it does the job, and does it quietly.

Have you tried CCleaner by Piriform out? It's free on the Google Play Store.

Just cleaned over 2gb of crap off my Galaxy S5 with CCleaner. No wonder it was running like so slow.

    Cheers guys

Steer clear of these type of apps - they aren't necessary and can cause more problems than they claim to solve. There are plenty of ways to clear out the cruft in modern versions of Android (4.4+) without relying on a third party:

    • Uninstall old apps that you no longer use.
    • Use the app manager in settings to see what's running and clear out or disable stuff you don't use.
    • Use the Recent Apps menu to close down background apps you're not using.
    • Clear the cache/temporary storage for some of the bigger apps you use.
    • Disable push notifications for social media apps.

If you're on anything older than Android 4.4 (Kit Kat), consider rooting and installing a custom ROM.
