I can answer that!

If the splitter is poorly designed, vortices can 'leak' from it's outer trailing edges and from the wheel arches onto the upper surface of the car. The effect both reduces down force from the splitter and lowers the pressure on the upper surface, making the front of the car go light. This can get very finely balanced and it only takes a small bump or crest to make the splitter completely separate from the ground effect and lose it's downforce entirely, upon which point the front of the car behaves like a wing very briefly, then the nose raises beyond the critical angle, air flow hits the lower surface of the car first instead of the upper and you have a back flip on your hands.

This phenomena is what caused Peter Dumbreck and Mark Webber's massive Le Mans crashes as well as the Porsche at Road Atlanta 98. You don't see it in open wheel cars because there's no large upper surface and wheel arches to catch vortices and generate lift.

No so awesome: happend this week, car flew over security fences, at least one spectator died. Nurburgring. @ Flugplatz. The name of the spot is named flugplatz ( airport ) because of the nearby small airport, but is also known for an uphill with a sudden drop.

 

Holy crap^; Higher fences needed me thinks. Very tragic incident all the same.
