I was curious how much data I'm using but couldn't find a way to check usage online. The modem doesn't give my a lot of information and I"m not sure if it's correct as it seems a bit high. Connection time: 1 days, 11:02:19 Data Transmitted/Received: 124.0 GB / 324.3 GB
You can just login to your BT Account and check it http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/32952/~/using-the-broadband-data-usage-monitor
I use Net Limiter. Though it's probably a bit advanced for what you are looking for and has a load of extra features.
I've been using NetWorx for a few years now. Great little tool, lightweight with a bunch of statistics. You can choose to filter out LAN traffic which is handy when you have a NAS or server. It's completely free, though IIRC you need to pay attention during the installation because it wants install some crapware, so be sure to untick that one box. This only reports the usage of a single PC though, for the total bandwidth usage I think the best option would be to use BT's tool, as mentioned above.
Yeah, I get this on Sky. Don't they realise people are interested/have other reasons to check even if it's unlimited? Anyway, probably one of the software tools mentioned above would be fine. Maybe check it against your modem as if it is accurate that would probably be the simplest way to keep track. Also, I just remembered, 8.1 has built in data usage monitoring. Not sure how good it is though: http://www.howtogeek.com/187483/how-to-restrict-monitor-mobile-data-usage-on-windows-8.1/
Switch to a better provider! I get a monthly pie chart, historical graph of the numbers there. I also get daily usage for the last two weeks.
can any software monitor total network usage or would they all be limited to the computer they run on?
Not a very compeling reason to switch providers. BT was the only provider offering decent speeds and had a good offer.
My limited experience with NetLimiter is it only tracks local machine, but that was several versions ago now - I could have out of date experience! Unfortunate!
I have the newest BT router. I don't know if it has the ability. I moved into a commercial building that was converted into residential. The problem comes from changing the postal code. I had to wait a few weeks before systems could offer me more than a 8Mb connection. Suddenly it went up to 15Mb and finally I was able to get BT infinity 2. None of the other providers had any deals at the time on 50Mb+ speeds and my building doesn't get virgin so not much I could due. I am happy with my service with BT as it is more reliable than virgin from my limited experience.
I think NetLimiter is still just on one PC. If you router supports custom firmware you can follow the advice given here (Scroll down to "Monitor Your Network-Wide Bandwidth Use at the Router")
BT Home hub you say? Pretty sure the HH5 doesn't have native traffic monitoring. Or, at least, I've never found any in my time with them.
Even though I'm on PlusNet and have an unlimited package they give usage stats, tis very interesting to see how much I actually use, I think I peaked at 350 gig the other month.
Do you have an old PC with 2 network cards? If so set up somethink like pfsense or untangle, you should be able to set it up inline although it will only help with the LAN, not wifi (IIRC) also you could see if the HH supports port mirroring, but I doubt it does. Also this could be run on a Raspberry Pi apparently, if you were so inclined. http://blog.kugelfish.com/2013/05/raspberry-pi-internet-access-monitor.html
If you're going down the route of old PC, two nics etc etc.. Sophos UTM for home users is free, and pretty good looking
Buying a wifi router and using it in switch mode after your gateway server would allow tracking of traffic that passes over wifi.
