if you can stretch to £250, i'd say this would be pretty darn good...

I've looked at the Nikon's - I'm a very casual photographer, a half decent travel camera - something that takes better photos than a camera-phone.

If you're just looking for a casual point-&-click for travel, then the Fuji Finepix are great in my experience.

Have used a compact, one with SLR-like functionality in a compact body, and the "bridge" type (SLR type body, but no interchangeable lens) and have thoroughly enjoyed using them.

If you're looking for something that can produce great images but is small and easy to carry around/take on holiday, then the Fuji XF1 falls well within budget (about £130 if you hunt around). If you can stretch your budget a little then the Fuji XQ1 is worth a look (about £210 if you hunt around).

    Thanks for the advice.

Had a quick look at the XF1 but reading about lens control error which puts me off slightly.

Quite like the XQ1, might be worth me paying the extra

The Finepix S1 is a little bit more than your budget but has a RAW support, weather sealed and a long lens making it useful for travel. The HS50EXR is also worth a look.

Saw some sample shots for the Pentax XG-1 today and for what it costs (£189) I was pretty impressed.
