Legend 8/10 Further cements Tom Hardy's acting prowess, a solid cast too. Keeps you gripped throughout, definitely worth a watch.
Armadillo - 7.5/10 Very tense. Because it's all real you have no idea which characters will still be all right in the next scene. Not a fan of the colour grading though (high contrast and military-movie-green from start to finish). I think it would've been even better if they had visited some of the soldiers a few weeks/months after returning home, to see how they look back on their actions and how they deal with everyday life again.
Went to see the following back to back last night No Escape - 8/10 Very good film. Wont say fun, as some parts were quite brutal to watch. Owen Wilson can actually act! Downside is Pierce Brosnan's accent, wtf. The Transporter Refuelled - 7/10 Good car based mayhem with a side order of hardman fisticuffs. Preferred Statham as the Driver, but enjoyable none-the-less. Not sure about the Father/Son element though. Could've done with more car chases.
What We Do In The Shadows - 6/10 Some funny moments, some funny things, alright for the first viewing but I probably wouldn't watch it twice.
Are you sure? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293662/?ref_=nv_sr_2 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388482/?ref_=nv_sr_4 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1129442/?ref_=nv_sr_5
I know I watched one of them and it was awful. But that is usually the case when they try to move the big screen to TV.
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father - Wow/10 As recommended a while ago in the documentary thread. No score; still too impressed by the content. Very different but fun editing style, the soundtrack sometimes felt a bit cheesy to me.
Super rough and very amateur editing, but I didn't expect what happened in that movie at all. It's hard to recommend, hard to condemn.
Ex Machina - 00000011/00001010 It's a film I wanted to like, I like the idea of the film, I Like elements of the film [the design of AVA for instance]... yet despite all that, the end result is one of the dullest, most boring films I've ever seen. At time I could feel myself zoning out and at one point I think actually fell asleep, such was its inability to engage me or keep my attention and ultimately I gave up on it and turned it of as I got to the point where I just didn't care what happened to any of the characters.
I tried watching this recently but gave up almost straight away, I was finding the intro nauseatingly irritating. Can't remember exactly why but not sure I'm ready to give it another try just yet. Instead I watched The Delivery Man - 7/10. As I'm sure I've previously stated, I'm a big Vince Vaughn fan and try and see whatever new films he's in (which is unfortunate cos he's been in some turkeys in recent years). This was a unique story and write interestingly done. Funny in places, but not a full-on comedy all the way through. Coincidentally I watched it in the same week that Britain's shortage of sperm donors was in the news, making it highly relevant. Nothing outstanding, but a few funny moments and worth a watch.
2012 - Holy **** that was bad/10 It wasn't even 'so bad it's good'... It was just a laughably cringeworthy and predictable film...
The Raid: Redemption The Raid 2 You have not seen a proper martial arts action movie until you watch these 2 movies. Everything else pales by comparison.
I see the counter from Hot Shots Part Deux when watching either of these, flashing over and over with the phrase MOST VIOLENT MOVIE EVER MADE. Raid 2 really is wince inducing, particularly hammer girl, just, ouch.
Written/directed by a Welshman... not a nationality that springs to mind in relation to martial arts films...
Yeah it's a bit of a weird one isn't it? The premise is absolutely amazing - I think the directors just tried to force the side where he is trying to screw with your head a bit too much. For me it became predictable. Very hard to empathise with the protagonist as well, he was a total douche.
