Never even looked at the thread date.

Mind you I think sometimes people over analyse films, not everything is supposed to be a block buster, some are just interesting full stop.

Fury qualifies as a tank movie, but I didn't like the story line and it went downhill from there.

El Alamein - The Line of Fire (2002) 7.2/10

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0329042/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

War seen through the eyes of Serra, a university student from Palermo who volunteers in 1942 to fight in Africa. He is assigned to the Pavia Division on the southern line in Egypt. Rommel and the Axis forces are bogged down; it's October, the British prepare an offensive. At first, boredom, heat, hunger, and thirst bedevil the Italians; then the Brits attack, and there's no luck or heroism in death. Finally, it's retreat in confusion. Serra, his sergeant Rizzo, and his lieutenant Fiori take a last walk toward home. It's said that each soldier gets three miracles; when Serra's are used up, what then?

    Folgore Division (Italian) 7.6/10

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046916/?ref_=fn_al_tt_3

This 1955 Italian production is based on real events and tells the story of Italy's 185th Airborne Division, Folgore.

The film starts out in 1941 with men from all branches of the Italian Forces volunteering for selection to an elite Division. The men are put through months of intense training leaving only the best. They are now ready for combat.

The scuttlebutt is that they will be joining with some German Fallschirmjaeger in an assault on the British held island of Malta. The division is loaded onto aircraft and sets off. The rumours turn out to be wrong as the Division ends up in North Africa. They are then trucked up to the front at El-Alamein.

The Axis attack toward the Suez Canal has stalled and they are now on the defensive. The paratroopers are to be employed as ground infantry on a section of the line. They are soon up to their eyeballs in sand, wind and the swarms of flies that are the norm in the desert.

Most of the time is just spent sitting in their dugouts waiting. The boredom is occasionally shattered by a British artillery round or a fighter-bomber attack. The Division scores an early success when a night patrol captures a battery of British 25 pounder guns. These are quickly put into service by the new owners.

On October 24th, the British and Allied forces launch their counter attack on the Axis line. Three British Divisions, including the famous, 7th Armored (Desert Rats) Division are sent against the Italian held area. The attack was expected to roll over the Italians and flank the German parts of the line.

The Folgore though applies a rude shock to the attackers. The Division is lavishly equipped with automatic weapons like the excellent Beretta model 38 sub-machine gun. This allows the paratroopers to inflict heavy losses on the British. The British pull back and regroup before coming on again.

The Italians hold out till November 4 before being overran. Except for a handful on men, the Division is destroyed with high casualties in killed and captured.

The cast includes, Ettore Manni, Jose Jaspe, Fausto Tozzi, Monica Clay, Aldo Bufi Landi and Mario Girotti. Mario Girotti would become a big international star in spaghetti westerns under the name, Terence Hill. (My Name is Trinity)

The film's director was Duilio Coletti. Of note here is the film's music composer, Nino Rota. Rota won an Oscar for his work on THE GODFATHER part II.

A very interesting film with plenty of excellent detail to Italian weapons etc. The use of real Savoia-Marchetti -82 paratroop transports was great to see. Several dozen of these survived WW2 and served into the mid 1960's. This film is well worth a watch if you can find a copy.

Anyone remembers 'The Beast of War' with Jason Patric? It's about a soviet tank crew, during the first Afghanistan war.

Well the obvious answer (especially for Sherman fans) would be: Tank

I'm glad you brought that one up., Rather obvious one some dont know about. Especially the younger guys. My father build the R/C rant used int he movie "1941" as well as the 2 F-16s in the movie Blue Thunder.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078723/

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078723/

he also built a scale m5 stuart in 1/6 scale. It was based off of the 21st century toys r/c tank they sold in the states at Toys R Us for about $400 if I remember right. I'll have to dig up some pics of it tomorrow.

I just finished rewatching Sahara with Humphrey Bogart. Besides being a great movie in general,
I noticed, with appreciation, some of the authenticity of the movie. This extends to some of the armament that came into use during the battle as well as where the first casualties occurred.

Before the captured German half-track was sent out to bring help, the mounted heavy machine gun was removed from it and used as part of the defense of the disputed well. In addition, not only was the first casualty killed, Stegman, who was manning this machine gun, but the second casualty as well. This was Williams who was killed by a sniper. Infantry tactics are most usually aimed at taking out an enemy machine gun as an immediate priority. So, the movie action followed what would have been happening in reality.

Also, when Waco had to abandon the half-track when it broke down, the machine gun mount was shown to be empty in two separate instances as he was dismounting. One segment was just a glimpse and the next was much longer. This gave the audience a complete picture of where the heavy machine gun had come from if not observed earlier.

As far as the American tank being an M3 Lee tank and not a Sherman M4, this would have been accurate as well. The M3 tank, with the 76 mm main gun in a sponson, predated the Sherman with the revolving turret. In addition, the earliest Shermans were used would have been a few months later when 800 tanks were sent to prepare for the second battle of El Alamein.

Even the premise that nine men would try to make a stand against a 500 man strong German battalion was entirely believable because the conflict was over something so vital as water in a parched desert.

I have spent hundreds of hours reviewing the actual reality of WWII in many documentaries. Although these did not spend any significant time adding background of the personalities of the men engaged in the struggles, there was enough of it that allows me to say that the actors in Sahara seemed quite flawless in their depictions of the way they fleshed out the characters involved.

The topic of this thread should have asked if there are any "good" movies about tanks in WWII, but Sahara should be included even though it's a great movie and far beyond good.

I watched Patton, yet again, last week. For the first time, I noticed
a flaw in the filming of a scene with Patton at the ancient battlefield of Carthage. George C Scott was delivered a long monologue about the ancient battle in Roman times. As he is filmed, it is done with sky and a huge white cloud behind him as a wide background shot

From high on the right, a distant aircraft appears to fly entirely to the left side of the screen. Even though it is clearly visible through the thin cloud, it was obvious by its rate of air speed that it was an aircraft with jet engine technology.

When Patton was in North Africa, the Germans were still trying to arm their ME-262 jet fighter with bombs to satisfy Hitler's demands that it could be used as a fighter bomber. The only other jet plane, also still in development, was confined to air defense of England throughout the end of the war when it first made its appearance.

The Germans did come up with a jet bomber, but it was much later in the war. The extraneous plane in the background was not big enough to be a bomber anyway.

I saw both the making of Fury and then Fury itself.
Besides flames and images of tanks, the only two other things that I remember about the movie was that the main story line which was so implausible that I felt quite deflated in my expectations from almost the beginning. The only words and exact scene I can remember are what the character Brad Pitt portrayed said as he was challenging some Germans. He very distastefully and unnaturally shouted, "I bet you like fat girls!"

I'm a genuine vet and I can tell you for certain that lonely men are apt to strike up a relationship with almost any young or middle aged woman when possible. By and large, they are serving in a capacity on behalf of their side's men and women. Last time I checked, people come in all shapes and sizes.

To me, most all of Fury was erased by the memory of such an uncalled for commentary expressing a very ugly and very unbelievable point of view. I will never bother watching Fury again.

Before ever watching Fury, the worst scene in a war film, I've seen, was with Tony Curtis in 1954 "Beachhead" where the climax of the entire movie was Tony swimming out to sea and sinking a Japanese ship, a destroyer no less, with a single hand grenade thrown into some fuel laden waves from an earlier action. This too was totally unbelievable. :brrr:

Sherman Firefly - The Sherman Firefly was a tank used by United Kingdom and some Commonwealth and Allied armoured formations in the Second World War. It was based on the US M4 Sherman but fitted with the powerful 3-inch (76.2 mm) calibre British 17-pounder anti-tank gun as its main weapon. Originally conceived as a stopgap until future British tank designs came into service, the Sherman Firefly became the most common vehicle mounting the 17-pounder in the war.

Tiger Tank I - was a German heavy tank of World War II deployed from 1942 in Africa and Europe usually in independent heavy tank battalions. Its final designation was Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger Ausf. E often shortened to Tiger. The Tiger I gave the Wehrmacht its first armoured fighting vehicle that mounted the KwK 36 88-mm gun (not to be confused with the 8.8 cm Flak 36). Only 1,347 were built between August 1942 and August 1944. Production was phased out in favour of the Tiger II.

Tiger II - The Tiger II was the successor to the Tiger I, combining the latter's thick armour with the armour sloping used on the Panther medium tank. The tank weighed almost 70 tonnes, and was protected by 100 to 185 mm (3.9 to 7.3 in) of armour to the front. It was armed with the long barrelled 8.8 cm KwK 43 L/71 anti-tank cannon.

    Thread resurrection!

While not exactly what has been asked for The Pentagon Wars is a great film based on true events about the design of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. It's hilariously farcical in the way bureaucracy is in this film.

More about these links later in this reply.

I found, on the wiki tank listings, that somebody had switched the #2 T-34 into #1 place and #1 M1 Abrams with #2 place. I corrected this error.

Note: Soon after the Korean war started in 1950 with failures of the WWII ammunition for the Bazooka against T-34/85 tanks, an upgraded rocket for the Super Bazooka was introduced into the theater.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bazooka#Rocket_Launcher.2C_M20_.22Super_Bazooka.22

After this time, the T-34 tanks were now entirely stoppable by infantry equipped with the larger explosive, hollow shaped charge.

"Large numbers of 2.36-inch bazookas that were captured during the Chinese Civil War were also employed by the Chinese forces against the American Sherman and Patton tanks,[35] and the Chinese later reverse engineered and produced a copy of the M20 designated the Type 51.[36]"

    {=====================================================================}

Infantry Fighting Vehicle is euphemistic. The more fire power on the vehicle itself, the more likely it is to draw fire from enemy infantry, aircraft, tanks or artillery. <or mines> The infantry - deep inside - never gets a chance to get out to fight.

" During the Battle of Ap Bac in January 1963, Violence
at least fourteen of the exposed .50 caliber gunners aboard the M113s were killed in action
    ,
necessitating modifications to improve crew survivability.[13] Soon, makeshift shields formed from metal salvaged from the hulls of sunken ships were fitted to the carriers, which afforded better protection. But, finding that this material could be penetrated by small arms fire, subsequent shields were constructed from scrapped armored vehicles.[14]"
