I always thought it was pretty retarded. tons of sites have em. Thing is I can't think of anything I own that I have a mobile charger for that I don't have a normal wall-socket charger for as well. And I'd MUCH rather have the stuff plugged into my wall socket than have a huge cord coming out of the front of my computer, bleah.

whoever came up with the idea to use it as a vapochill needs to do some research b4 posting his ideas *cough*emabarassing himself*cough*. Not only is it not designed to cool a pc case, tons of overclockers already use the same technology employed in 12 volt mini fridges to supercool their cpus, we call it peltier cooling.

It's actually quite a good idea - point being that your PSU can supply a lot of current, and is readily available. Finding a wall wart that can supply that mcuh current (8 amps) is not easy. However, the cig lighter does draw a lot of current - and as most of us here are already pulling maybe 20 amps from their 12 volt line, using 6 amps to light a ciggie might very well make your system crash.

Try using the cig lighter a couple times when your car has a low battery. I'll bet 20p that it won't even crank over afterwards.

Doesn't if you use a bit of common sense, I.E compressed air, brush and a duster, every now and then. Only ruins stuff because the smoke clings to dust particles and makes them clog thing sup.

I've been smoking near my computer for years and not had a problem.

edit: Wtf - why was thread bumped to the top when I was the last person to post in it, and that was ages ago?

Actually most 12v minifridges will take as much power as a cig lighter but for quite a bit more than 20 seconds.

    Egads, damn you! Bumper...

I think things like those should be banned tbh, if you want a cigarette lighter, mod one yourself into your PC case.

Its for the lazy modder who wants to just have 1 thing in his / her tool box: A screw driver.

SVC has a cig-lighter bay faceplate WITH the ashtray built-in. Thats a much better mod IYAM.

Lmao...that way when you get owned and slam your drink into the cupholder instead of on the table, it spills all down the front of your comp...frying anything you just may have up there, or that the liquid can seep to...

    OH GOODY!!!

    EEERRRMMM!!! NO!

    Read the specs:
    http://www.sunbeamtech.com/PRODUCTS/CIGARETTE LIGHTER.HTML

it's 12V (just like a car battery), from a Molex and less than 9A when heating.

The cupholder variant fromn Thermaltake (a well trusted PC accessories company I might add):
    http://www.thermaltake.com/accessories/xray.htm

Same V (ie 12, from Molex) and 6.5A energy drain.

where the hell did you get the idea that thelighter plugs into the mains?

After ya posted this I had a good reason for one - to setup my just delivered GPS system for the car whilst sat in the house. Older one that needs plugged into 12v socket whilst in use. If I had a spare bay I'd buy one just to save me sitting in cold car setting it up. Admittedly having a GPS tell me exactly where my armchair is isn't that helpful but hell saves teeth chattering whilst car warms up.. :)
