I guess you could call this a mod?!?!

What's the best way to get two PC's to work with only 1 keyboard and 1 mouse, hardware or sorftware?

    Primary PC OS:
    WindowsXP

    Secondary PC OS's:
    Win98, Redhat 9.0, and Mandrake 9.1

    Thanks guys,

Any particular brand for the KVM switch? What's the cheapest I can get one?

Is there any other software out there other than VNC that will allow me to use 1 keyboard and 1 mouse on two PC's?

Oh and by the way I am looking to run both PC's at the same tme.

for a kvm, ebuyer.com had micro ones to control 2 pc's for about £15, if you are running xp and have both machines on a lan you can use remote desktop connection that is installed with xp in the communications folder.

use a program called Win2VNC works really well for me what it does is that it opens up a small one-pixel wide window that you can't see on the side of the monitor closest to your other screen, and then it uses VNC on the second computer, which then goes and controls the second computer, meaning that to get to the second computer all you have to do is literally move the mouse across the gap...

    Sidney:

How do I get Remote Desktop to work?

I have 2 PCs on a LAN, both running XP home. I get a message saying "the workgroup contains no terminal servers" when I browse for a computer to connect to. What do I need to do on the "remote" PC, so the main PC can access it using remote desktop?

    Cheers

off the top of my head, on the machine u want to access go to control panel, system, then the remote tab and check the enable users to remotly connect remotely to this computer.

you have to have a user account and password on the machine being accessed as well, (the log on to windows one, with a password i think)

try it, if it doesnt work say and i will try it and work out something i have forgotten to tell you.

I use win2VNC for my system, only it's not multi monitor compatible, so sometimes when I move the mouse the the other computer, and then back again, it misses my main monitor, and uses only my 2nd monitor, and the monitor of the VNC'd PC. Then I just have to move the mouse back again, and it works, but kinda goofy sometimes...

VNC works with any OS too! From the money to the penguin to the apple if you wanted to... I use it from XP pro to Win2003 Enterprise.

The two on the left are the main system, and the one on the right is the server I VNC into.

the belkin kvms are nice, I use one at home when I've got all 4 of my primary computers in the same spot...

useful that you're not working inside a window or anything like that, it uses same monitor and has whatever resolution you set the second computer to

that or remote desktop which is what I use for my computer in the common room in my suite at the dorms

If you've got the two monitors already, a simple circuit with a few relays [ eight SPST, four DPDT, or two 4PDT ] and a USB hub does wonders.

im interested in this vnc thing. how responsive is it and does it use a lot of memory and eat up a lot of cycles?

this would make certian online games much more convienient because now 2 keyboards and mice is a reall pain in da arse
and where can i find it.

I use Win2VNC 8 hours a day, it is rock solid stable, and as fast as if you were using the original mouse and keyboard.

It doesn't seem to eat up too much CPU time.
Around 10% on the host and slave machine when the mouse is active on the salve PC.
