Snoopers Charter passed into Law

I'm sure the gambling commission and revenue and customs are constantly dealing with terrorists.

 

Likewise the Food Standards Agency and the Department of Transport.

 

All the red top tabs have to do is employ a contractor/bribe a civil servant and they could mine a year's worth of data to destroy anyone. Phone hacking looks like child's play. Rupert Murdoch is gonna love it. None of this is without a warrant so even if you just look at something questionable, it'll be used against you. Insane. totally insane. I'm never returning. This has sealed it in my mind. Will actively research a new country to bring up my children.

This is just a guess as I'm not that clued up on firewalls but I'm not sure a firewall would help much, the law says companies must help the security services compromise their own services and devices when requested/needed, and that extends to placing back doors in firewalls, routers, encryption, and basically everything that's used on the internet.

If they divulge the existence of a government sanctioned backdoor they could face jail time, although how Mr IT guy is going to be able to distinguish between the government and bad guys back doors is anyone's guess

The only way around it, and even then you couldn't be 100% sure, would be to use a VPN located somewhere other than the UK or other five eye country.

As some critics have said the snoopers charter will only catch the innocent and incompetent, and there's other ways to catch incompetent criminals.

 

Your best bet is to build your own router and put your ISP one in bridge mode, reducing the back door to what they would basically have at the ISP anyway.

Like most petitions on the parliament website the repeal the new Surveillance laws petition is likely to have little effect, however it maybe worth signing it if you object to mass surveillance.

What a pity that the UK is now leaving the EU; the European Court of Justice could have offered some useful checks and balances on the application if this bill.

I thought membership of the EU was unrelated to the ECJ (can't check the article (paywall)), or am i confusing the ECJ with whatever court presides over human rights?

 

From the first line that appears on googling ecj:

 

The European Court of Justice [ECJ] is an EU institution...

The European Court of Human Rights [ECtHR] is not.

 

My confusion there i think, without having read the article though I'm not sure why the ECJ would be involved with the snoopers charter, IIRC the ECJ just clarifies European law, while the ECtHR deals with convention, like the human rights bill we signed.

Would be interested to know what European law the snoopers charter breaks.
