Hi All I just ordered the Palit GameRock NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Palit-GameRock-NVIDIA-GeForce-Graphics-x/dp/B01GGBQ1ZE It requires 6 pin plus 8 pin power connectors. However my PSU does not appear to have an 8 pin connector: Corsair CMPSU-520HX I might have lost this - it is a very old PSU. Should I buy a modular cable somewhere for this? There are spare 4 pin slots in the PSU. Please let me know what I should do and where I can buy the part. The card arrives Wednesday so please let me know ASP. Much appreciated! James PS - my below sig is way out of date!
just bought this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Startech-E...006PHXLRG/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 will it work?
I wouldn't be surprised if Palit gave you at least one of those for free in the box. Edit: From the techpowerup review this pic shows one at the top there
You should be ok with a molex adaptor. That said, and I am a stickler for running older but high quality PSU's as I have 4 older HX series parts, that PSU is a decade old and has a old school 3 rail @ 18 amps for the 12v line. While I think it will run I am not sure how wise it is to put a 1080 with such a dinosaur as good as it was at the time.
Plugged everything in last night and it is all working! Glad I got that adapter though. The supplied adapter converts two 6 pins to one 8 pin. I needed 4 + 4 = 8. The screen did randomly go black 3 or 4 times for about 1 second while playing games and video. This might be a driver problem so I reinstalled windows + graphics drivers. I will see if it plays up tonight. Mr Bungle - please explain your concerns. Could I be damaging the card? I think I have a decent warranty... think I have to register online for it. The 1080 is incredible! I am running it on my 4k TV. I upgraded from a gtx 650 ti so the difference is .... noticeable. Thanks for the help guys!
I would not be using an adapter on a GPU that costly. Especially as Palit do not handle warranty themselves. That's probably why they feel safe giving out those adapters. All that money on a new GPU, get a new PSU dude. Even if the HX was a great PSU in its day the caps will still have aged as they all do. Not worth the risk IMO.
I have to agree with V-T, at best the PSU is aging and will slowly fade out. At worst, the molex to 8 pin adaptor will melt (seen it a fair few times on lesser cards). Get a new PSU!
If the PSU goes pop you risk losing all of it. https://www.amazon.co.uk/SilverSton...3647102&sr=8-13&keywords=modular+power+supply Would do the job, and probably save you some in leccy and heat as well.
Video: https://youtu.be/YFNnMI1ZZkQ Ok i will buy the psu Please see above video for the fault. This continued once i left the game to windows. It happened before and reinstalling windows and graphics drivers didn't help. Only restarting the pc fixed it in the short term. Do you think the new psu will fix this? Thanks
As mentioned PSU looks to be not upto the task. Either way it is not possible to fault check the GPU without a "known" good PSU.
thanks for the advice. the psu gets here on Wednesday. Hope this fixes it and the crap psu hasn't done any damage... Metal Gear Solid V in 4k with max settings is sweet. The crap weather wont bother me much! BTW I am trying to get a good mechanical keyboard for £50 with UK layout. AMazon doesn't seem to have anything/ Suggestions? Ta
