BT Infinity II still blazing along over here:



4G on my phone consistently clocks in at 25-30Mbps down and 12 up. Perhaps time to look into some sort of 4G router or tethering solution.....

 

Australia isnt known for its fast internet and we just switched over to NBN here at the office and I'm surprised at the good result!

 

I cheated and ran it at uni, but home result is basically identical (Hyperoptic FttB).

 

Finally upgraded to 50mbit. The tech just dropped off a new the modem and I was surprised that I didn't need a bonded connection. Now of course I'm wondering if I can upgrade to bonded 100

I remember coveting my brother's 128k dual-channel ISDN while on my lowly 56k modem that was lucky to ever hit 46k, my current speeds would be unimaginable back then!

BT Infinity 4 330/30; rock solid, great ping and get this speed all day and all night.
It's been hinted that this will increase to 360/60 later this year to ensure that Infinity 4 FTTP remains significantly superior to the 'UltraFast' G.Fast FTTC offering of 314Mbps, which will be nice!

Wish I lived in a place served by Hyperoptic, but still 1 percenter cheesecake!

 

Haha puts things in perspective, doesn't it? I remember having to wait for images to load... like up to a minute for one lousy JPEG file.

 

I remember paying a monthly fee for an ISP and then having to pay for the phone calls that my modem made when I actually wanted to connect.
I remember not having a monthly fee and just paying for the phone calls.
I remember the first "free" ISPs - ones with no monthly fee and no call charges - and dodging my way around their pitiful attempts at installing ad banners.
I remember having to use software that could resume downloads, in case my connection dropped mid-way through a 3MB MP3 file.
I remember creating auto-dialling scripts to re-dial my modem and re-connect my IRC session when the 60-minute max connection time kicked in.
I remember 33.6k modems being the most advanced technology you could think of.

I sound like a cranky old f', but I'm only 36!

Yep I remember all of this, especially loss of connection (often brought about by angry home-owners wanting to use the telephone...). Do you remember the golden age of P2P with Napster? I remember when they got shut down and I tried all the alternatives over a period of several years... eDonkey, eMule, BearShare, Kazaa. Oh, the memories!

 

Before Napster, you could just Google (I'm using that as a verb of course, because Google as a search engine was not a thing, you would have probably been using Altavista to do your Googling) for music and download it from a variety of websites in various qualities and formats.

I... erm... knew a kid... that saved up months and months worth of pocketmoney to buy a CD burner (a $500, single speed CD burner) and a bunch of spindles of blanks, downloaded popular albums overnight and used to sell CDs to his classmates for a fiver a pop. O-G music piracy.
