So i'm in a toss up presently, i'm saving up to sort out my new computer part as I'm upgrading from a FX8350.

There is a price difference between the two but its like 10 quid difference,

The I5-7500 or the AMD Ryzen 5 1600

    Which one ?

The I5 will be utilising a ASUS B150m pro gaming board while the Ryzen will have a MSI B350m Pro gaming board

Out of those two R5 1600 every single time.

It has more cores and threads (6/12 vs 4/4) and can overclock.

The only thing to watch out for is getting decent (2667Mhz+) RAM for the Ryzen system. This may increase the price difference somewhat (roughly £30 assuming a 2x8GB kit).

The board should support much higher than that with XMP profiles (My Tachi for example only officially supports 2667Mhz but has options all the way up to 4000Mhz).

I don't know much about the particular board you are looking at but it might be worth checking out some reviews / doing some more research on it.

This seems to suggest it can support higher than 2133Mhz:

Ryzen loves fast memory by design (the Infinity fabric - communication between cores on separate CCX modules - runs at half memory speed) so it is definitely worth spending the extra on faster memory up front if you can. Ryzen is somewhat sensitive to memory modules so its best to do further research on the ones you are looking at before buying.

With the Intel CPU you could probably get away with slower memory but I struggle to see the point in buying a 4c/4t CPU with similar single thread performance when a 6c/12t CPU is available for a little more.

    If you want to think of it as a comparison between a i5 7500 and a i7 7800k (X299 6c/12t).

As said though really research the board and memory before buying :)

EDIT: Maybe as a budget balance you could look at say:

    MSI B350 Tomahawk - £99 on Overclockers
    R5 1400 - £159 on Overclockers
    8GB (4x2) Team Group Dark Pro DDR4 3200Mhz - £80 on Overclockers

(16GB of the above is £155)

Interestingly the R5 1600 is only £30 more than the R5 1400 so definitely worth the small amount extra.

Get on the MSI site and look at the Memory QVL list - Ryzen can be picky with RAM. Single ranked Samsung modules are the choice pick for higher speeds and overclocking, but I would advise choosing any RAM for it from the QVL list - even the 2133 stuff.

I had a 32GB kit that was great for my Skylake rig but Ryzen hated it.

Despite the above, I vote Ryzen all day long, especially if you plan on keeping your rig as long as the last one - core/thread count will likely matter more than single core speed as the years pass.

OP stated B350m, whereas the Tomahawk is ATX.
Also, my 32GB Skylake kit was Team Group - Ryzen hated it. Not all RAM is the same, but it's worth researching first.

Ryzen not just the for the chip but the fact that while AM4 lasts intel will probably have another 17 socket types come out.

Absolutely no point in buying an 4c/4t i5 with Coffelake right around the corner - at the very least there will be a flood of 7600K/7700K's popping up on marketplaces/gumtree/ebay.

But yeah, go for the 1600, if you get lucky and get a 4Ghz chip, you'll have enough cores and IPC to last the next half a decade with ease.

That is true, I missed the m in the board names.

RAM was just for price comparison sake. Just checked on Overclockers and a comparable kit of 2133Mhz ram is only £10 cheaper.

Cheers for the response! I'll keep mulling and seeing take in what you all have said! I'll keep an eye on the thread as well. But it looks like Ryzen is getting a strong backing

1600 is a belter. I can confirm it plays happily with the cheapest DDR4 on the market (OCUK, Team Group).

In the MSI Tomahawk. Thus I would imagine this will work also.

If you are limited on funds for ram. Just fit it together, set it all up, update the bios to the latest version using MSI's app in Windows, reboot, set AXMP - happy days.

Even if the i5 7500 was the pick of all CPUs, I'd not be buying one today given that Coffee Lake is imminent. Personally, I'd just wait for CFL and then review the situation: it may well be that Ryzen is still the best option but there's no point in acting precipitously (unless of course you need the PC right now).

And fwiw I don't expect Coffee Lake to be a massive game changer, but it may move the goalposts a bit in terms of cores/threads (and a minor speed bump too).

I reckon the 6c 12t CL will be quite expensive. Maybe as much as £330 -£350. As such I don't think it will affect things much. The Ryzen 1600x may drop in price and if Intel pull a surprise I am sure AMD will also drop the price of the 1600 too.

Maybe, maybe not. But the point was that waiting and seeing is the best bet right now, just like it is immediately before the launch of any new series of hardware.

I've already heard people calling it Copy Lake, and not just because the mobile chips are rebrands, so I doubt it will have much of an impact on the market.

Nothing is making me feel the real need to upgrade from my 3770 yet.
It'd definitely be Ryzen though which is tempting me just for temptations sake.

RAM is a huge amount better on Ryzen now (with the latest BIOS updates) than it used to be - you won't need to plash out for the specialist bits unless you want really mega mega speeds.

The 3000MHz kits seemed to offer the best value when I bought my memory a month or two ago - the prices start rocketing up after there.

Non K and no. It's in a small case and quite frankly have had no need to.

Mind you I've just got a 1440p monitor and waiting on my 1080 turning up, extra mods in FO4 and the like that hits the cpu may cause it more of a strain (?), i'm just looking for an excuse to go Ryzen and move this into a backup/photo pc anyway :)

Just built a Ryzen 1600 system, 8GB of 3000MHz RAM (Corsair Vengeance) and GTX1080. All games I throw at it run flawlessly.
Ideally it want's at least another 8GB of RAM but I had no problems yet. First thing after a build updated BIOS and it runs my RAM at 2933MHz or something like that.

System also very quiet (Phanteks P400) and doesn't heat up that much on stock cooler. I don't see temperatures past 55-60C playing demanding games on Ultra.

For the price, performance is great with Ryzen chip, I would definitely recommend.

Shouldn't cause any strain, heat, or need for more voltage. You need to access your turbo menu and up it by X4. Intel gave four bins on the 2600 and 3770 then stopped doing it on Haswell (tossers).

Don't throw Just Cause 3 at it, it will warn you you need 16gb and then crash :D
