Hi All, so just want to validate my build before i purchase and make sure ive got the best parts for the money. Im not sure about a few things so any input would be great. Im looking at the below from Scan AMD 1700 - £280 (im assuming the X isnt worth it ? £40 more) ASUS ROG STRIX B350-F £108 or ASUS PRIME X370 Pro £137 (worth the extra ?) Corsair 16GB DDR4 Vengeance LPX 3200MHz £185 I also need a decent cooler although im not going for anything extreme on an overclock. anything around 3.9-4Ghz. Would a decent air cooler be ok or should i opt for AIO loop ? Thanks, Adam
The non-X and B350 will do the job. RAM - *shrug* Cooler - any decent air cooler should suffice, just make sure it comes with AM4 mounting gubbinz.
Apparently going to be price drops on Ryzen at overclockers.co.uk tomorrow, stated as HUGE! what that equates to though I don't know. If you were not going to overclock the X has higher all core base frequency by a considerable amount and so would be worth it. For RAM, makes sure it is on the QVL list, or at least as the Chip seems to like DRAM containing Samsung B die ICs like the following also at overclockers here CL14 which is better.
hmm i good to know ill take a gander tomorrow morning good shout on the RAM Ive checked the QVL list its pretty small for DDR 3200 and many of the approved sets are 3400, 3600 or 4000 which are stupidly expensive.
Yup the rated ram speeds don't mean a lot for Ryzen, most of the speeds are set for Intel and AMDs memory controller is another kettle of fish. Anything over 2666 is considered overclocking and down to your luck. The key thing is to get good quality chips, the price and speed doesn't really matter, if you see a set at 3200 14-14-14 or 3600 at 16-16-16 its a good chance of being Samsung ICs which are the easiest to get running at 3200 and beyond with low latency, Ryzen performs well with tight timings, that kit I linked seems a good deal.
As an example, Gibbo states the 1800X will be under £300 here and here Which if it is the case is a much better buy than a 1700 at £280 due to its 3.6Ghz base. An water cooler would be my choice of cooler.
1700 £230 on OCUK, and 1600 for £160 - this is awesome! A shame that Intel has been able to pull out all of these great reviews despite not having any stock or even released chipsets. It will easily sway those who don't look closely at prices.
I assume these are "Black Friday" sale prices, rather than any sort of across the board price cuts? £160 for a 1600 is pretty tasty indeed.
They're even cheaper on Amazon. £220 for the 1700 and £158 for the 1600. As I look in my crystal ball I see a lot of happy Ryzen owners by the end of today.....
pulled the trigger grabbed the 1800x for £289. £60 more than the 1700 seemed just about worth it to hope i get one that i can lower the voltage on to save on the thermals. Also went with the ROG strix B350 and the TEAM GROUP DARK PRO " EDITION" 16GB which are on 14-14 timings so they should be samsing chips. I just need a cooler now. Can anyone recommend one? I have a fractal R3 so its not the biggest of cases. Open to AIO but i don't want to pay stupid money. thanks,
Good stuff, hope it works out well for you. Not sure what to recommend on the AIO front, I have never used one but it would appear your R3 could accommodate a fair bit, particularly is you have dropped/relocated the HDD cages. You could probably fit a few rads in there at a couple of locations, a slim 240 up top, a 120 at the rear and a 240 on the front, if you were doing a custom loop and pop CPU, GPU in it, its a fair out lay but once you have the bits they'll go with you between machines, my WC gear is a decade old, just new pipes and coolers with each change and a vacuum of any dust build up, good to go again
Any dual rad AIO should be fine unless you want air? in which case it's really not hard to find one. 1800x should theoretically give you 4ghz as opposed to 3.8 or so.
id say my budget would be sub £100 relaistically but price/perofrmance would be key. If Air is sufficient to cool it at 4Ghz then happy to run with that
