Me likes Carlins words there... well, i like the point he's putting across. Whats wrong with generalisations though?? Is it wrong to say "All caucasian people have light coloured skin" "Many asian imigrants run there own buisness's" (Interesting fact... 30% of asian people in the UK are their own boss!) etc.... Another thing i dont get.... We call Americans "Yanks" They call us "Limeys" "Aussies" call us "Pomeys" We call the French "Frogs" & they call us "Ros Beoufs" All bar one of of the above are delberatly mocking.... ....but were not aloud abriviate Pakistani to .... (iam not going to write that cause someones bound to complain ) Maybe if we treated EVERYONE with the same standards there wouldnt be so much tension between other countries, cultures etc
We call you Limeys? Never head that before... Everyone I know calls you all either Brittish (generalization), Brits (group) or a Brit (singular).... EDIT:: Well, okay, I have HEARD the word "Limeys", but didn't know it ment Brittish...
But apparently its not acceptable to called someone who is dark skined "black" ........ Hence my point Dad, aparently it was something to do with preventing scurvey (sp) on the long haul across the pond back in the old days
Yeah, something to do with when the English use to come over to America on sailboats many years ago. Due to the lack of food preservation methods available at the time, only long-lasting food was brought on to the boat. Limes are a very long lasting fruit so they always brought loads of them. (Here's hoping my primary school head-teacher was right ).
Long lasting and packed with vitamin C, stopping the gums rotting and the onset of scurvey (vit C deficiency). Hence 'Limeys', but I think the saying dropped out of general use shortly after the second world war.
I can confirm that Assault Courses are no longer called that, they are called Confidence Courses or Confidence Runs. Gas Chambers have also been renamed to Respirator Testing Facilities. The limey thing is true also, comes from the tradition of adding Lime Juice to the drink (that included Rum and Water) served daily out of a barrel with "God Bless the Queen/King" stamped on the side. and It was because of it's health retaining properties. The Americans thought we were strange, hence the nickname.
Sorry to be picky but it's Cheryl Tweedy, not Claire - I noticed earlier but I keep seeing it and it's bugging me.
Oh... so thats what you meant on the other page!! I would be a little embarassed if i knew that mate....
so if a black woman called a white woman a 'white bitch' thats regarded as racism also..u dont seem to see many black racists..i am sure they are out there. The black community seems to feel like every harsh word said against a black person is said because they are black, which is a complete falsety
What about people of mixed race? Do they only feel like they're being singled out based on race half the time? Again, that would be a gross generalisation. Yes, some people who happen to be black prey upon the fact that they can exploit ultra PC attitudes for an easy ride. That by no means means all black people are like that. This kind of thing arises when someone's experience of a particular group is limited to a select encounter. For example the media sensationalising legal cases and seeding racism where there is none. It's then understandable that someone would generalise like that, adopting a slightly blinkered attitude, when the media fails to write about positive role models who happen to be black.
nope, im sorry to disagree, the only people (in england) that can be comsidered racists are white people, its sad but true.
What other page?? It is Cheryl isn't it? I am right aren't I? I followed the links to the news articles in the first post in this thread?
