    Hey guys,

I'm currently looking around for a new graphics card. It seems it's a terrible time for it but I've just got to try my best.

I've seen the 1060 is being recommended all over the place but it's the 6gb version. Most are saying the 3gb card is a waste of space and not worth picking up.

Does anyone have a 3gb card they use in today's recent games at decent graphical settings at 1080p?

I'm just wondering if I should opt for the 3gb card right now, or stagger on with my old card for a while yet, as I have no intentions of getting a higher resolution monitor. Not really interested in buying used at this point either.

Thanks in advance for any input :)

I have played many AAA title games on my old MSI Laptop with a 1060 3GB and that maxed every game out at 1080p, and ran VR games perfectly. A desktop version will be faster too.
So your 3GB VRAM will be fine for 1080p. :)

i run at 1080p as im waiting for a good price on a 1440p IPS 120+ hz monitor still.

With my GTX 1080 i see vram usable above 5GB

You will find that it just caches the VRAM you have, if you have lots of it. So it isn't actually utilising all 5GB at 1080p. Most games at 1080p will struggle to use more than 2GB VRAM.

Prices are so insane right now that the 3GB variant is probably a better bet than the 6GB - the latter is about £100 more expensive which is nonsense.

Tbh, at 1080p I'd be tempted to just get a 1050Ti.

    1050Ti is about £180
    1060 3GB about £280
    1060 6GB about £380

Just feels like the 1060s are brutally poor value.

Thanks all for your input. It's a real help.

My current card is a 760 2gb so anything recent should give a nice bump in gfx quality. I've just recently got a ryzen CPU, mobo and ram bundle with my first SSD, so it's just the graphics to sort out now. Pity it's so painful right now.

Some of the game benchmarks for the 3gb and 6gb cards have quite minimal differences in FPS, I'm just in two minds if another 100 quid is worth 1-10fps right now.

    Cheers guys!

From what I recall the mobile 1060 3gb is identical to the desktop version. Obs you won't get the same cooling or overclocking but yeah, same chips apparently.

The card itself is good enough for 1080p. However, there are a few games that will make the VRAM creak (ROTTR, Quantum Break, Deus Ex and so on). You will need to be a bit more sensible on those but other than that it should fly.

Also, don't be tempted to run any game in DX12. It will perform worse, no matter what the title. And it gains you nothing visually so it's just a waste of time. Use FXAA, don't touch MSAA etc and you will be more than happy.

I was dead set on replacing my GTX 950 2gb (and I have, but not at any expense) and then I put it on the monitor I bought (1680x1050) and was actually amazed at how well it ran games. Mind you, that 950 was under water and was clocked to 1550mhz lol. I'm sure it would have done more, but I did not have the VRMs cooled at all.

I've got a Fury X now waiting to go in there.

I have a Zotac 1060 3GB Mini (I have applied a modest overclock to mem and core)
I bought it a month or two ago from Novatech when it retailed for £180
It's £110 more than that now because of the mining craze.

I play @1080p, mainly stealth and shooter titles.
I am currently playing Sniper Elite 4 (Great game BTW) with every single setting maxed out and am getting between 70-105 FPS. This is coupled with a Ryzen 3 1300X clocked @ 3.8 GHZ and 16GB of DDR4 running @ 2666MHZ

Cracking card if you can get it for a half decent price. (Unlikely right now)

On a side note, the 1050 Ti 4GB cards are quite capable. When using one in my backup right I was gaming fine on my 2048x1152 screen without any major issues. EVE, ARK, WoW and The Division. Granted I wasnt running things on ultra and a few of my games are not that demanding.

Should see a glut of 1060 3gb cards hit the market now 3gb is not enough for Ethereum mining.

Thanks all for your input on this. I decided to get the 6GB card in the end, Its quite a bit more money but hopefully will last a bit longer than the 3GB card would have :)

Scan accepted order, payment etc then cancelled the order...gutted!
    Even left me positive feedback.
Guess what feedback they are getting?

I saw the 1060 3gb for £230 when I had a week long hunt recently. What a faff that was, only to end up empty handed. Then out of the corner of my eye I spotted an entire rig I hadn't touched in months, and I robbed the Fury X out of it :D

I see 9gb in Fallout 4 @ 4k on my XP. However, I do know that cards use VRAM differently. I don't even have FO4 maxed either (god rays are on medium, no AA IIRC).

I do, however, know for sure that 3gb is not 100% enough for every game. Even Shadow Of Mordor will use more than that. I know because I have a 4gb Fury X and when it runs out of VRAM it used to black screen and that was your lot. These days AMD made it so that it uses your paging file. No more BLSODS, instead it just drops off about 90% of the FPS lmao. Some games are so pretty though I don't mind the slide show :D

The very same card on their website is £347, so the ebay offer was an obvious pricing error, that said Its disappointing that they didn't honour it, after all it was only 19 cards...
