    The "30%" improvement is based on PSNR comparisons, which is worth bugger-all for real-world quality (even worse than SSIM!). There's a good reason why turning on the 'optimise for PSNR' tuning options in encoders makes the image look worse: the human visual system is not a per-pixel error comparator.
    Like with VP8 and VP9, I'll wait for actual real-world psychovisual comparisons of encoding quality, and like with previous projects I expect patent licensing to still rear its ugly head regardless (as it always tends to with video encoding standards), as the presence of a free patent licensing pool does not prevent 'aggressor' pools forming and launching lawsuits.

    Good, free and open standards are the only way computing can be fair and available for all. Hopefully some of the new image standards coming will be free as well.
