Vote in this poll so we can see which one all you bit-techers really prefer or if you like both. :eyebrow:

many people will say its down to preference, but the amd does have the advantage of 64bit processing, not that their is alot of software around to use it.

    I'd still say AMD ;)

which is top of the orb? oh yeah, amd :)
its a 64 bit chip, yet runs 32 bit code faster than the p4, a native 32 bit chip. its gonna scream when it comes to 64 bit code :D

the Athlon 64's 32bit architechture is just a tweaked K7 architechture, but it does have 64 bit extensions, which, I spose, is a good thing

I'm confused, since when has a kickass and cheaper processor been a bad thing?
The AMD for me - pwns the P4 at it's own game. Perhaps not for too long though - new 64-bti Intels coming out soon...

Then again, AMD are the underdogs of the processor world when it comes to funding anyway - Intel have been in the limelight since urm... well before i can remember anyway...

They're based on the same design principles, but are in fact quite distinct.

Atm I'd go with Pentium 3.2GHz. If you're buying an Athlon 64 now, you're either buying the mainstream/budget version or the performance version chip and board which will be obsolete in 6 months.
Whereas outside benchmarks, you'll see the benefits of hyperthreading in multi-tasking.

So yes, P4 for me :p

Intel are trying to kill off AMD as they can under cut them so much if they wanted, Ok so u don't need 64 bit just now and by the time u do it will b upgrade time again, but the point is that if u want 64 bit to be main stream in a few years u have to go and show Intel that the consumer wants it now and not when Intel decides that it's time to upgrade. (if it was left to them we'd never get it). AMD has the right idea but i think this is make or break for them as they can't really aford to slip up here at all...

it'll be amazing if they do well with the 64 consumer products, but if they are killed off or hurt too much by intel that could have drastic effects on the consumer market in the near future.

thats why i'd go for the AMD64 (fx?) :D plus like someone said b4 it does do 32bit just as well as Intel now that it has SSE etc... Intel only wins it's battels by making it's instuction sets the main ones and they starving AMD of them for a few years,

I would say wait a bit until there are a few steps of the 64 out then get one of them, that way the proce has dropped a bit.. I built a "dream computer" with a 64 then went back and did the same with an XP and the proce dropped over 500 USD. and I wasnt shopping... Right now the A64 parts are Uber expensive, but of course if you want the 64 bit before everyone has them then...

I personally will stay with Intel for now as my true love has always been with speed the most ghz/mhz so for now Intel has the best speed wise.

Until AMD breaks the speed barrier that Intel has, Intel will always be the processor for me

Well, comparing prices for the whole system, I`d buy a P4 system before I buy an AMD64 system. I mean what programms support 64 bit at the time or will in the next 12 months ? Not many I suppose so a P4 3.2 Ghz will do quite well for a year ... and it`s currently cheaper than an AMD64 system soooooo ... it`s a P4 for me, although i must admit I like AMD better ...

    Cheers

    Fred

AMD 64 faster than the p4 and about the same price for the chip but then you have to buy the ecc ram that bumps the total price up
