Ok, I found out there are still some tricks I can use to wrap up my studies in the next year regardless of this disaster. Let's hope it works and that the uni is willing to cut me just a minimal amount of slack.
Not exactly "what's making my life awesome" (overall this is still a really **** situation I never wanted to be in), so I'll just post it here.

You should try having an electric pay as you go meter. Bloody nightmare.

I believe that's exactly what we have :(, put £10 on this morning, £2.50 automatically disappears to debt arrears which is fine, but the other £2.50 basically disappeared in about 4 hours lol

Trying to adopt a cat (or 2) is a more laborious affair than I thought it would be. Missed out on 2 of the cutest cats and was quite sad to see the reserved sticker go up on Horlicks and Hobnob without ever hearing back, but Larry and Hardy look to be fine gentlemen, so here's hoping for the second app.

Lots of good luck with this. I would have a huge house full of adopted cats if I could, I'd have them all. We were pretty lucky with ours, 2 we adopted from the Kitty Cafe here in Nottingham and, as we are very well known there, it was a really easy process, took a wee while but everything was fine. Our third was not technically an adoption or rescue, but after seeing the state of the little beastie once we got her home, we most certainly did rescue her. Conjunctivitis, and ear mites, plus we were told that "he" was 10 weeks... Nope, SHE (as it turned out) was more like 6 or 7 weeks old (only weighed 600g). Thankfully we know what we are doing with cats and kittens and the little monster is thriving, 5 months old now and just over 2kg...

I'm being teased by cats now. Yesterday on the walk to the office a stray came running up to me for some fuss, today there was a cat in the car park.

You can't live in the states without a car (unless you're in a city? No experience there). So we rushed to buy a car. Found one, test drove it, decided to buy it.

Went to register it in my name, it's only possible with a state ID or a driver's license. Both of which to get require a social security number and maybe even a driving test, which can all take a while to get and the burocracy here is just insane.

Anyway, we then had to find someone willing to have the vehicle registered in their name (and be liable if anything happens) and be on our insurance policy. My wife's boss accepted but he's only available to register the vehicle on Thursday. That means extending my rental car period until then which cost another bloody 380 bucks.

Moving here has just been a moneypit.

We're sharing the place we're staying at with a little brown bat. 2am, sitting by the open door hoping the lil buddy flies out and nothing more comes inside.

Today I moved an 8x12 shed in the scorching heat while pretty hung over. I almost passed out when we were taking the roof off. Thank God for my brother in law who basically sorted most of the deconstruction and reconstruction. Would probably still be out there now trying to take it down if it weren't for him.
