It seems that my 280x has died and I need a new card. If I can't find anything here I will be buying from eBay. It seems that the RX 570 and GTX 1060 are pretty similar in price, the1060 seems to go for around £10 more. I currently game at 1080p and will be moving up to 1440p within a year. Freesync but be nice to have as I'm not going to pay extra for G-SYNC. I mostly play games like NieR - Automata, GTAV, FF XV, Just Cause 3 and the Witcher 3. It would be nice to keep temps and noise down of course.
For 1080p I'd go with either a RX 580 or GTX 1060 but I would avoid the RX 570 for perfomance reasons. There is basically nothing between the RX 580 and the GTX 1060 in terms of performance, so pick based on freesync / gsync preference. However if you plan to for 1440p later neither one will really be good enough, with current games a GTX 1070 is basically the minimum to have a good experience at 1440p. There are new cards coming later this year, but things like performance and price remain to be seen and with a dead card you can't really wait and that of course complicates things as you might end up having to upgrade twice.
The RX 580 seems to go for more than the GTX 1060 6gb. It seems that my card died at the worst time as rumours are they are coming very soon so I really should wait. Leaked Email Suggests Nvidia's 11-Series Arrives Late August
Yep AMD cards are still horribly overpriced, the RX 570 for example is just a rebadged RX 470 which launched at £150 ages ago, same thing with the RX 580 which is a rebadged RX 480 which was a £200 card ages ago. You could of course gamble on the prices staying inflated for a while longer, buy something like the stupidly priced RX 570 and hope you can still get something for it when dumping it once the new nvidia cards come out. But no really good options when needing a card now.
They're only releasing ones that will be way out of your budget, something that won't affect current "lower" end cards too drastically. I see you've gone ahead and bought the RX 480 in the MM, which is a good deal. You can, if you really want, flash it to a 580 and convince yourself you've got the newer card...
Leaks do indeed suggest that the lower end cards are further into the future, but nvidia are currently giving away free SSDs to get rid of the low end cards (at select retailers), so the leaks about the lower end cards coming later might be wrong.
I already bought an RX 480 8GB some I'm good for now. I may switch to a used 1070 if places are good.
Due to the sh*t coin mining... I mean bit coin mining... the price of the 1070s and other cards are ridiculously priced these days. Last I checked, it would cost me twice as much to replace one of my cards that I bought over 2 years ago.
I spent $230 per card. Recent search on Newegg costs $463.30 for one card. Glad I bought the two cards when I did.
1060s at a push, yeah. They're also way down from that crazy figure he put... I saw them for under $250 recently.
Launch MSRP of the 1070 was $379, so def wasn't 1070s unless it was through the EVGA Step up program or an employee rebate somewhere, but $230 as a regular price accessible to the general public definitely never happened.
Precisely... I've just checked, and you can get an ITX variant of EVGA's card for $299, with a $20 off mail-in rebate and Destiny 2. Not far from MSRP, is it....? Alternatively, you can get a GIGABYTE G1 3GB thingie for $239.99 from other sellers besides Newegg.
I bought the 1070s nearly two years ago, before the ridiculous price increase that resulted because of bit-coin mining. Though I didn't buy them until the fall, the cards came out in June 2016. I never buy the cards when they first come out. Way to expensive, but I'm glad I did buy the cards in the fall because the prices skyrocketed once everyone started chasing the bit-coin, etherium, and all the other scams.
I bought the first at BestBuy in the US for $230, a couple of weeks later I bought the second one for $200 using my BestBuy rewards to discount the second card. Then I spent around $35 online to order the SLI high bandwidth bridge. So I spent less than $500 US dollars for the two cards and the bridge two years ago.... before the prices skyrocketed due to mining coins out of nothing.
I’m still not believing that you bought 1070s for $230 each. No way. I worked at B.B. and I know that their discount wasn’t that awesome... Nope. Not buying it. Calling BS.
