After browsing this board for a while I decided to register so that I could post as well... This will be my first post.. Here we go! I have built a custom alu/plexi case as a replacement for my home server which was very ugly, big and noisy. The case was designed around a Via Epia M9000 and it had to be small enough so that I could place it on my desk. The case would be in the line of sight all the time so it would be great if it looked nice... Here's a short version of my full project log: I first needed to get some plexi: And some alu tubes for the frame of the case: Time to assemble the frame: Finished frame: Mounted the Via Epia Mainboard and the PSU Cirquitboard: Mounted the CD-rom drive and the 240 x 128 Graphic LCD: Working on controlpanel: End result: The full project log can be found here: http://www.xndr.com/pages/hardware/vortex.micro/projectlog.html Let me know what you think! This is the first time that I've posted this mod on the web... I still had to write the project log... I'm currently working on my personal website, more mods and projects will be added during the following days... This is my first custom case project by the way... I got the LCD from Modwarehouse and the rest of the parts from local hardware and DIY shops. Stuff to do: The LCD cable still has to be soldered and I need to install the EL wire. I also have to find a way to get rid of the wire mess inside the case.. I hope that I can free some time for that next week.
Cool mod man! I like the aluminum tube idea, rather than angle bracket things. I may have to steal that idea if I ever build a cube. No offense, but the wiring inside looks pretty messy, and the LCD looks a little unlevel. It's probably not, though. Just work on maganging those wires. And remember, I'm really just a wannabe modder (no tools yet ) so take this with a grain of salt.
Yeah.. the wiring... I think I will add that to my 2 do list.. There are to much wires for such a small space.. but I'll try to figure out what to do with them.. I will have to open the case anyway when I'm going to install the LCD cable and the EL wire.. My 120GB harddrive is also still lying on top of the CD-rom drive. Thanks for the comments
That alu tubing looks really clean. I like it. If you do get round to doing your cables, hope you will post more pics. I like the look of the control panel too, it really fits with the theme of the case....Good work man.. **Edit** And welcome to the boards, there is no turning back now!!!
I'll post some new pictures when I'm going to work on the wiring and and the LCD... A few shots "behind the scenes" are always interesting
And I thought I was the only one to use those plastic connectors/tubing Very nice looking What's the overall size ? it looks about 12" cubed to me...maybe smaller. Cheers, CC
That is very, very nice I love the construction method, its so simple, yet it gives excellent results. I really need to make a case myself now Does any one know where I can get similar aluminium tubing and the plastic corner connectors in the UK?
Yo can get the corner brackets at Ross Handling. Im just finding it hard to find the aluminium tubing.
nice case man i realy want to see a shot of the LCD in action! ps you may want to turn your site link into a clickable via the magik of vb [edit] or html cant rember which for sigs [/edit]
Very nice job dude!!! Ya gotta get rid of that beige drive thought. A Coolermaster Silver Bezel would look sweet. Those feet have got to be lit up too. Nice work
Thanks! I thought about stealthing the drive or something similar.. but I think I will leave it this way... It would have been nicer to have the drive match the case, but I think I will swap this drive for a DVD burner in a couple of weeks.. so it's not worth the trouble right now... The feet do light up when I turn the glow leds on... The leds shine through the plexi, downwards towards the feet.. It's just as if the feet have built in lights I spent a couple of hours yesterday to create the LCD cable. I also mounted the harddisk in the case (it was lying on top of the opened case for about 1.5 months.. ) I also wanted to install the EL wire in this case.. but I didn't go through with it.. there's just not enough space left Here are some nice shots of the LCD output and the caselights: I've also updated my project log.. you can find some more pictures and info over there... I think this project is done! Everything works okay now.. Finally some output on the LCD! Let me know what you think of the end result!
