sooo, i decided to take the plunge and watercool my current rig. I've finally finished it and after running the pump for a bit it seems to be holding water without any issue. had a bit of an issue to begin with as i forgot to put in the plugs for the graphics card block and it sprayed water when i was priming the system.. ooops. i left everything to dry but sadly my PSU didn't survive as it was mounted underneath the GPU. I've replaced my PSU, and i've plugged everything in and turned it on. system posted and booted fine. my issue is that my GPU according to Speed Fan is running at around 24*c but my CPU is showing on all 4 cores between 40 and 50*c and thats with just booting up and idling. Avast is taking up some CPU percentage but other than that its pretty much sitting there idling So is my CPU cooler not fitted correctly or could there be another issue? I took the old cooler off, cleaned away the old paste and put new stuff on the same as i've done previously.
Sounds like you’ve not mounted the block properly. Did you take the block apart at all? Have you made sure it’s flowing properly?
didn't touch the block apart from mounting it on the board and plumbing it in. there is water flowing through it with no issues from what i can see
Did you remember the T.I.M.? Can you provide more information on your loop. Type of blocks, pump, radiator, fans? Pictures of the the loop will also be helpful.
Something definitely doesn't sound right, though your GPU temperatures are spot on. I'd remount the block and see what happens - be sure to apply an appropriate amount of thermal paste.
Always worth checking over everything and look for silly oversights - I once left the polythene film on a waterblock and wondered why my temps were rubbish. Some CPU blocks have predefined direction of flow which can hinder cooling, although not to the degree you're reporting. It is a simple series loop, right? I have seen people plumb the blocks in parallel, which can work with multiple blocks of the same design i.e. multiple matching GPU blocks, but will almost always cause chaos between CPU and GPU.
I immediately thought 'protective film!'. We've probably all done it at one point or another, especially if you're prone to tinkering.
so the setup is as follows: Pump/res - GPU - CPU - Rad then back to the res When i cleaned the thermal paste of the cpu i did give the CPU waterblock a wipe as well and couldn't see any films off it. I guess i'll take it apart again and take a look. I know in the instructions that there were flow directions and i'm sure i followed them but won't know until i get home
just to update. Took the waterblock off and re-seated it. there was sufficient thermal paste covering the block and cpu as well as no protective cover on the waterblock still. Put it back on and once finished bleeding the system i powered it up and the temps remained the same. Decided to pick up another waterblock. this time a thermaltake one. swapped it out and the CPU now sits at around 30 - 40*c. was happier with this and fired up a game that i know would hit the CPU hard and it sat happily around the 60* mark
Was the first block a new one? Sounds like it was a used one that got gunked up or suffered galvanic corrosion.
