Ok.. Decided to mod the hell out of my old dell xps-r400 (p2 400) My goal: Give a new life to my old dell which is sitting pitifully, doing nothinng My theme: Titanium/Black colour scheme with all green lighting. So far, this is what i have done.. Cleaned up the interior of dust(imagine you never open a computer for 3 years and open it to clean it!! That was a lot of dust!!) Cut a window(yet to attach plexi) Spraypainted the whole casing to metallic titanium, all the drives black. Cut a window(yet to attach plexi) Changed the power and hdd led to green Changed the iomega zip drive, floppy drive, cd-writer activity leds to green. So, here are the pics till now.. Much more modding to be done Ok.. The case is still in its very early stage of transformation and i have to agree still looks crappy.. Anyway, i was too tired to continue so i decided to snap some pics and post it here. Anyway, still a long way to go and after that.. I know it'll look good..
Yep.. A p2 400, with ''dell's" custom "cooling" : A big lump of aluminium. Cooling is not a problem with this cpu, as even without any fan working(except psu), it still does not get hot.. Doesn't generate much heat.. Most probably set this system up with mandrake 9.1. or BeOS v5 professional. Just for the fun of it, as this cpu is just 'sleeping'..
Thats pretty awesome. Dell Cooling=Hilarious You may want to check out http://www.blingmethod.com The guy who runs that site used the same or a very similar variaton of that dell case. Version 5 is the dell transformation he did Enjoy!
@Fyberwire Wow.. that Dell Mod is good.. Very good. Anyway, i have almost finished doing the case. I just have to attach the plexi.. Next up is case lighting and cable management.
I was gonna say nice cable management, but then I realized there werent any cables! lol, nice work nonetheless
why a case that large for such a small motherboard? oh well, you will need good cable managment in orfer to keep it looking neat.
Not bad I saw a really nice mod of this case once it was all black etc and had one of those electric ball things stuck in the side. it looked very clean and well done.
Ok.. Major Update Here.. Continuing from what i left off.. After painting the case(outside), i decided this is not the only mod that has to be done. More time had to be sacrificed for this baby, and i had to minimize costs.. So, everything is taken out again.. Then IDE cables are rounded using the money-saving-but-impressive-results insulation tape. At this point i went to my local electronics store to buy some components to make a fanbus.. and i stumbled upon something very useful: heatsinks for TO220 type packages (7805, LM317t.. etc) These fitted nicely on my GF2 GTS Hhm.. not bad for RM0.8(bout USD 0.2) each.. I good investment indeed.. OK next, i thought of replacing the fans to transparent blue fans, but then these are expensive and decided to do another money saver.. Spray the fans (chrome like colour) and fix my own leds.. Here is the results: The PSU fan back to where it belongs.. Hhm.. Looks like the real thing to me.. I fooled my friends too.. Ok.. continuing my journey.. Everything fixed back together to see how it looks.. My hd window mod.. To mount 2 hd's on this case, some major drilling and cutting had to be done, as the standard hd holder can only hold 1 hd.. Ok.. That's about it for now.. That's about 80% complete.. Just left a couple wires to loom and a baybus to make and to fix lighting.. Pics will be up once completed.. that *should* be tomorrow..
not bad at all... alot more than ive ever done. can't say i like that greenish/blueish color though. but like i like to say, it doesnt matter what others think, just you. lookin forward to future updates
Looks nice, I am impressed by the LED fans. [OT]Hey spider wanna gimme a pII/pIII? I'll pay shipping........ [/OT] -Bob
Good looking case, though I'd have to agree that the colour isn't to my taste, but then that doesn't matter. I'm very impressed by your cable rounding, very neatly done!
thumbs up for the hdd mod - does it still function ok - or purely eye candy looking good - keep it up!
Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11 I've completed the massive transformation!! I have been doing this mod for three days with little or no sleep.. Boy am i glad that i've successfully finished this mod.. Anyway, here are the pics you all have been waitong for: (note that there is no 80mm fan on the plexi.. i don't have a lighted fan yet so i'll just have to wait on that one. Other than that, the mod is complete) Please give your comments. Sorry for the bad photos.. i am very tired and my hands are shaking. Just wanted to post this before i zzz..
I would have just opted for cold cathodes, but this is a budget mod.. and each led i can get for about rm0.6(USD 0.15) and thus had to go the extra trouble to use leds instead..
I'm not really crazy about your choice of interior color, but for what you've spent and how it looks, good stuff. OEM chassis mods have a special place in my heart. Hell, even goliath (see sig link) was an OEM chassis. Not that you'd know it know One piece of constructive criticism: Vinynl dye the biege plastic parts black or that (IMHO awful) aqua color. Cheers!
