News AMD announces second-gen Ryzen Pro mobile chips

I'm looking to replace my nine year old laptop soon(ish), and I'd like a Ryzen based one, but I'll be waiting for 7nm to come along.

 

So mobile Zen+ are 3000 series and desktop Zen2 are 3000 series?

I suspect people wanting 7nm Ryzen laptops will have to be very careful about what model numbers they buy.

 

Didn't they do the same with the last generation, Ryzen Pro mobile seems to architecturally run a generation behind, i guess there must be a reason for it but i can't think of it.

 

Not really paid much attention tbh. Are the 2000 series in laptops Zen then? Or Zen+ or both?

Yes they are Zen.

AMD releases a new design/process for desktop, then 12 months later releases it to mobile. With the Ryzen cadence, that has meant the next gen desktop parts coming out when the previous gen mobile do. To avoid confusion the parts are named to match the desktop range of that year, but AMD mobile 2000 series are 14nm Zen cores. AMD mobile 3000 are 12nm Zen+ cores. There will not be any 3000 processors in the mobile range with 7nm, they will come next year, and will be labelled 4000, assuming AMD doesn't change it's naming strategy or release cadence anytime soon.

 

I think the jury is still out on that one.

 

They should just call both desktop and laptop 7nm CPU's 4000's just to avoid buyer confusion.

 

But then 4 is an unlucky number in China so that'd be a problem.

 

I should have qualified that: To avoid confusion to the non-technically minded who can only go by the numbers in the device name.

For those of us with an interest who look into it, it is definitely more confusing.
