Over the last two (!) decades my Film watching has been sporadic, infrequent and prone to looooooong gaps; so would be great to know what shows I should (have) watch(ed).

I'll give anything a go, but lean towards Science-Fiction as my go-to genre.

Don't worry about stating the obvious, as I expect I will have missed some of them!

    Sister thread for TV series

Interstellar and The Martian and Inception immediately spring to mind, I also enjoyed Gravity but wouldn't recommend it as highly.

I really enjoyed Shazam! recently. I'd definitely give it a watch.

The new Power Rangers was surprisingly good, if you fancy a nostalgia trip and happened to grow up with Power Rangers.

Logan was excellent, and easily the best X-Men film in a long while.

Blade Runner 2049 was pretty good, I'd recommend having seen the original too, but if not I think it's fairly.. Self explanatory. Although may produce some googling after the fact.

Venom was.. I dunno, I found it fun but I wasn't expecting much so perhaps I was just pleasantly surprised.

The Accountant was one of my favourite Ben Affleck outings in recent memory.

I enjoyed Denzel in The Equalizer too.

Admittedly not much on the sci-fi side, but.

    These.

    Not these.

Do an IMDB advanced search: feature films, last 10 years, rated over 7.5, over 200,000 votes (important else you get lots of odd films that one person voted highly and no one else ever voted for at all!) and start watching!

    The Highwaymen (chuffing fantastic!)
    Bohemian Rhapsody
    The new Halloween.

Those are the last 3 I have seen and they're all awesome. I don't really do sci-fi sorry.

That might be a worthy method.

One that note, an older oddball film: Kabluely

    +1 for the following...

    District 9
    The Accountant
    Children of Men
    Interstellar
    Paul
    The Martian
    Gravity

Plus a few I highly recommend from the last 20 years (or so) despite not being Sci-Fi...
    Limitless
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
    Saving Private Ryan
    Schindler's List
    The Shawshank Redemption
    Se7en
    Fight Club
Batman Begins (watching it again as I type)
    Inglourious Basterds
The Dark Knight (Heath Ledger's finest moment imho)
    The Wolf of Wall Street
    28 Days Later

You know two of the three you dismissed without reason appear on the same search method you espouse, right? And the third fits all criteria other than 200,000 votes, right?

I like your list finger66, but what you think about adding those ones, ( avoiding SF and horror movies(that I love too), and a lot more movies, not to post a too long and annoying list:

    the Bourne trilogy
    the score
kill bill 1 and more... kill bill 2
    Inside Man
    Fracture
    The Beach
    The Bank Job
    The Village
    Art School Confidential
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
    No Country for Old Men
    In the Electric Mist
    The Bucket List
Millenium 1,2,3 original version (may be the best thriller ever for me)
    Dolan's Cadillac
The Hateful Eight (one of QT's best film)

Let's go all Marvel for a moment:

    Avengers Age of Ultron
    Captain America The Winter Soldier
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1

Mind you, you kinda have to watch them all...

    DC:

    Man of Steel
Batman vs Superman (plenty of haters, but watch it a few times to actually appreciate it and some of the most awesome quotes in a film ever).

I enjoyed Fury, but didn't think I would. Probably seen it three times now, Brad Pitt is good but it's not overly American.
