My start menu has started screwing about in Win 10.

Sometimes, it won't be populated at all, just a big blank box, sometimes pressing the start button won't open it, sometimes it'll open, icons will be present, but you can't click on any of them (left or right).
It would appear to be completely random, it's just done it now and the computers only been on for about 30 mins not doing anything.

Restarting explorer fixes it, but there's obviously something wrong somewhere I just don't know where to start. I've tried googling, but all I seem to get is articles telling me how to use the start menu and threads giving the fix of restarting the explorer process.

Does anyone have any ideas on where to start?

What build of Windows 10 are you currently using?

Forgot to say, it sometimes fixes itself too.

I have that problem too. While not a permanent solution, a quick fix is to restart Windows Explorer in Task Manager

Yeah, I've been doing that, just very annoying.

When I ask Google about a start menu not working, a couple of the links suggested opening Windows powershell and running the command "sfc /scannow" to check if there are corrupt files. If corrupt files are found, the command "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" can attempt to fix the files. As always, proceed with caution since these steps have the potential to cause damage, but powershell is at least a built in Microsoft tool so that reduces the danger a bit in my opinion.

Also, why are you still on 1803? Are you choosing not to update to 1809 or is the update failing? If the update is failing, that might suggest bigger problems with your system.

Pah to Windows Start Menu, find Classic Shell and install it, it is still working on the latest build despite the developer stopping at the end of 2017.

One day it will stop working but until then it's great.

    Little update.

I think I've found a way of not having the restart explorer to get the start menu up. Twice now, after opening the notification bar, the start menu then works.

@Colonel Sanders Updates are on auto, don't think I get any say in the matter so it's just on whatever it's updated itself to. Just checked and it's still 1803.

Won't let me through win update, just doesn't offer it to me.

Might try the manual update, as the Xbox Game Pass App won't work till I'm on the latest.

I'm on 1809 since yesterdays update to two of my PC's, they did say that they were rolling out 1903 slowly after the last debacle.
