News VESA unveils DisplayPort 2.0

4K 144hz, 3440x1440 200hz, 3840x1600 175hz monitors are already available or due shortly and all of them desperately need DP2.0, so pretty disappointing to see it being still 1.5 years away...

 

It would be nice if it could carry some power. Low power monitors that only require a single connection would be cool (without needing to faff about with USB).

 

Inheriting the Thunderbolt 3 interface (and Type C port capability) you can supply power over the same connector. You need to use Type-C rather than the old DP/mini-DP connectors as those lack power pins and existing cables are not rated for current carrying capacity.

Biggest disappointment is continuing to kick the optical transport can down the road. Bulk fibre is cheap but endpoints (optical transceiver modules) are not due to relatively low volumes and premium target markets. Standardising a widespread interface on optical would have the effect of opening up a bulk market for optical transceivers and pushing price down to match or beat that of the active channel conditioners needed for high bandwidth copper interconnects.

 

Thank you for the heads-up on that 3840x1600 175hz monitor. I googled that res and hz and came up with this:
