Hi so Im thinking of buying this ram for my ryzen build it says its ryzen optimized but just wondered if anyone knows if it's any good with the new ryzen 3000 series https://www.scan.co.uk/products/16g...800-3600-non-ecc-unbuff-cas-18-135v-amd-ryzen
I don't think Zen 2 is as picky with RAM as the first gen was. Right now I'm running my 3700X with 2 x 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200MHz CL16 and it works flawlessly.
ok thanks these ones have 3600mhz which i heard is the sweet spot for zen 2 just wasnt sure about the CL 18 but i thought this looked a good price for 3600mhz ram
I wouldn't worry to much about the difference between CL 18 or 16 unless you're chasing those last few percentage points of performance, at most you'll only see a 1-3% difference.
The 2000 series processors were nearly as picky either but since technically were out of memory spec after what 2400Mhz ish its good to check. My MSI board has about a million compatible configurations, and at the time I was buying none of them existed on newegg. Newegg had a pile of nice ram "for ryzen" but was not on the list. I could have bought that ram and yea it would work fine, would it work at the max clock speed with my specific motherboard? Maybe, heck pretty good chances. buuuuuttttt in your example I run Corsair Vengence LPX 3200MHZ CL16 ram as well on a OC2700. my buddy at work has a Corsair Vengence LPX 3200MHZ CL16 on the same motherboard with a 2700X cpu, but it will only clock to 2400Mhz whaaa!?! whats the difference they are both Corsair Vengence LPX 3200MHZ CL16 kits! The kit he bought is a different factory part number, what does that mean? well the kit I have is using samsung memory, was tested by MSI to work at 3200Mhz and placed on the list, his part number was not, and gee golly its not stable over 2400Mhz, using hynix chips is it worth reading the list and hunting down an exact part number that has been tested working by your mobo maker and being happy, or taking a crap shoot and being disappointed for the money and let me tell you finding Corsair Vengence LPX part number 123XYZ was a royal pain in the ass outside of newegg, which of course temporarily sold out, so I waited, glad I did cause the alt part number would have pissed me off just as it did my buddy
QVLs are good guides but TBH I don't think i've ever had kits that exactly match ones on those lists - i've not been able to find them. Some RAM manufacturers sites have configurators that'll give you pointers, Crucial has one that lists kits 'guaranteed' to work with your mobo. 3600, yeah that appears to be the sweetspot price/performance. Is the performance worth the premium when 16gb 3600 is not that far off the price (kind of) of 32gb 3200? Dunno, not been convinced of that yet but it'll be down to the individual and their use.
According to AMD the sweetspot is 3733 CL17. But, as has been said before, you won't notice the difference in most day-to-day workloads. Go for a known brand with reasonable specs and price and you should be fine. Maybe google what worked on earlier AMD boards as a guide. Tbh, I wanted Flare-X 3200 CL14, but I would've had to pay as much for 16 GB as I now paid for 32 GB. And that would've been a 1-5% improvement. There's value to be had in the market, just the absolute top is still overpriced.
That is true. I think they were just pushing 3600 as the 'value' sweetspot, depending on your definition of 'value'.
If you plan to buy only two modules, i wouldn't worry too much about QVL. That should just work (worst case scenario you need to increase the SOC voltage a bit). I got 4x16GB Ripjaws V 3200CL16's first in my X370/Ryzen 7 1700 system, and then in the ASUS X570 WS/Ryzen 9 3900 system. In both cases only a slight bump in SOC voltage was all i had to manually set after selecting XMP profile to make it work.
Yeah, the 'value' in 3600 is pretty limited right now. I mean 3600 CL18 is around 50% more expensive than 3200 CL16. And the real benefit is slim at best. For those interested, the sweet spot discussion is centered around this slide.
ok thanks for the advice everyone i have already pre ordered these https://www.scan.co.uk/products/16g...800-3600-non-ecc-unbuff-cas-18-135v-amd-ryzen but i can always cancel. everything that matches the recommended timings and speeds is just so expensive! ive seen some cl16 3200 ram for £80-85 but the 3600 ones i have pre ordered are an extra £20
