My sister-in-law asked me to come up with a build for a new gaming rig. She asked for a gaming rig that can handle FFXIV and FTAV at 1080p. Her budget is 5-8k RMB which is roughly £600-950. I'm thinking about an r5 3600 + B450M combo and a RX590 - Is this a good platform for her? Does it matter very much which memory I get? I found a decent price on Corsair and Kingston DDR4 2x8GB 3200 kits but they don't list the timing. Which of these is better. Is an rx590 8GB a good recommendation? I have a 580 8GB that runs very hot. How much PSU do I need? 500/550/650? I’d say given the bargain pricing that the R5 2600 shouldn’t be overlooked tbh. And genuinely the AMD heatsink is pretty good. Just make sure you’ve got an in and an out case fan.
It seems to be a £82 between a 2600 and 3600. These benchmarks on Reddit suggest that it is worth the price difference. I want the platform to last 5 years with a GPU upgrade in a few years.
Heck even the 1600 would be fine. I doubt you would be CPU bound with a GPU like a 590 any way. Personally I would get a cheaper CPU and a better GPU. It always makes much more sense in a gaming rig. Plus she can upgrade the CPU at any time to one of the newer ones once they drop in price. I'm not expecting Zen 2 to hold its price for long. AMD always bring them out at £500, then move onto the next and drop prices. It's like they are competing..... With themselves haha. Thing is I have a theory on Zen from the beginning.. Basically I remember AMD (Lisa Su) saying how relatively cheap Zen was to manufacture, because of the kickass design. Sooo, my theory is that they are literally selling dies. So they want you to buy a 1600, then the 2600, then the 3600, because each time it's another payday. Whereas Intel charge much more each gen AMD keep the prices pretty much the same. I really don't see that you would gain an awful lot with a 590 going with a faster CPU. As I said in my post (well Ninjad, btw) I would rather get a cheaper CPU and a much better GPU. That is what will make the biggest difference I reckon.
I can more than max FFXIV on my 1060 6GB at 2560x1080 and on my other half’s 1060 3GB at 1920x1080. My friend has a R9 380 4GB and it handles GTAV fine. I don’t know much about the relative performance of the 590 but given you can get a 1060 6GB around £110 secondhand now it’s a serious bargain. On the motherboard front I’ve used the MSI B450M Pro VDH Plus twice now and I’m happy with it. I would double check the m.2 slot also takes NVMe before you take this recommendation though as I only put a m.2 SSD in one of them and that was SATA m.2 not NVMe. It’s available for around £62 here and is pretty much one of the cheapest available but worked great. Also on PSU front, in the UK you can get Aerocool Integrator series, the 600w is around £34 which is a flipping bargain. Might vary in price at your end of course.
She has the budget for a better CPU, but I wasn't finding anything I could justify. On Taobao the 590 is cheaper than a 1060 6GB. If not the 590, what GPU would you recommend for 1080p gaming?
Am I missing something here, WoW "recommended" spec is only a 4770 or 8 core FX ? Or is WoW not World of Warcraft ?

Soon hopefully. It's better to be comfortably in the mid tier than at the top end of the lower tier. So personally I'd wait, or get the 5700 blower. Mostly 'cause I doubt she's a hard core overclocker and stock they are very quiet. Unless you're unlocking P states etc the blower version is fine. Jayz did a pretty good video about water blocks and the stock cooler. Worth a watch tbh.
My 2013 4670K @4.2GHz with my former GTX 970 were good enough for around 60fps at 1920x1200 on GTA V. I'd suggest that any quad core CPU that's newer would more than do the job (though would suggest Zen/Zen 2 Ryzen 5 if aiming for a build to last <5 years). Agree with 500/600W on the PSU. GPU - 1660Ti would be the obvious starting point (if buying new and planning for a 3-5 year investment) thanks to the lower power consumption, though a quick look shows that the 580 just creeps over the magic 60fps minimum at 1080p on very high settings for GTA V. Toms Hardware shows it being just faster than the 970 I had - which did have some occasional significant drops in frame rate (to 25fps) which I'd put down to the 3.5GB VRAM when rendering smoke/particle effects.
I think it's OK for 1080p medium which is where you would need to be on a GPU with 4gb VRAM but yeah, anything over that and it will start texture streaming which will bring your fun to a crawl.
Gta 5 can be a be an hog I have a 4 gig card on 1080p and can quickly use that up when cranking up the options
