    Is 16GB the "limit" for DDR4? I've got 4x32GB DDR4 (non-ECC) DIMMs in a box at work, and DDR4 LRDIMMs already reach 128GB with 256GB on the way. Or does LR/Registered/ECC etc not count? Is this single vs. dual rank? Please explain.

    If you've got a load of money to spend then otherwise fairly ordinary desktop 128GB DDR4 kits that consist of 4x32GB DIMMs certainly seem to be a thing.

    it could be the JEDEC/'official' limit in the same way DDR4 'officially' tops out at 3200MHz [iirc, might be lower]

    iirc anything outside jedec specs is just deemed be overclocked

    It was the practical limit for consumer DDR4 sticks for many years, only recently have 32GB ones become readily available.
    The result being that most QVL lists top out at the 16GB sticks and also why support for the bigger ones can be hit and miss in the IMC / Bios.
