Graphics If a card supports 4k will it do 5120*1440?

Hi guys,

Quick question. I'm looking at moving from 2 Dell U2311 (combined 3840*1080) to the Dell 49" which is 5120*1440.

My card (GTX760) says it supports 4k, which is technically more pixels, but the Dell is 'wider'. Will I be able to use the card? I guess what I'm asking is, is the limit total pixels or are there arbitrary limits on each dimension?

I guess I should mention that this isn't for any kind of gaming or anything. I'm aware the ancient 760 will struggle to do any kind of meaningful performance at that resolution, I just need some actual video output.

There are no limits as all if memory serves. You may be limited to 30 or 60Hz because of the connections that card has, but beyond that there'll be no limitations. If you want to check look up what connectors and versions of those connectors the card has and then check what the max resolution at a particular refrect rate each one can support

That's where I got "4096x2160 (including 3840x2160) at 60Hz supported over Displayport" from. Fine in terms of pixels, not fine as 5120 is wider than 4096.

 

5120x1440 is less pixels than 4k so you should have no problems driving the screen, the age of the card might mean its bios might not handle scaling well outside of windows.but I think most cards just do svga resolution in this case anyway.

 

With a bit of googling if you have DP 1.2 or above you should be fine

Edit: 'Displayport 1.2 is capable of 17.26 Gbps. Uncompressed 10 bit 5120x1440 @ 60 Hz only requires ~13.9 Gbps.'

 

I'd budget for a new graphics card. It should drive the display, but not at native resolution.

* I'd still try it just to see, but if you're getting a 49 inch 5120 x 1440 screen, you can afford £70 or so for a card that can drive it.

 

With MST, DP1.2 can happily drive two 2560x1600 monitors from one output. As your 5120x1440 is a lower resolution than that (and well within the HBR2 bandwidth limit), driving it will not be an issue.
You may have issues with game performance with newer games (and older games can do weird things when confronted with ultrawide aspect ratios) , but for desktop use it's fine.

Then do it! You're a adult, its your money if you can afford it!

 

Recommendations for a budget card? Photo and video editing, displayport, quiet. Preference for AMD as their linux drivers are better. I'm currently deciding between a sensible 550 or an overkill 5500XT.

 

What do you class as budget? I don't really follow AMD as I do mainly CUDA dev so I'm locking into the green side!

 

I've always been green but their driver support is really falling behind. Never had an AMD card as I've had a 9500GT, 9800, 280, 210 and 760, in roughly that order. I don't know, I'll keep looking but I'm reticent to go for the 400/500 series as they seem to draw a lot of power but then the 5500XT is £200, which is too much really.
