Need some help justifying this upgrade How much performance upgrade would I see from an overclocked to 4.6GHz i7 Sandybridge to Ryzen 3600? With Asus B550 cashback deal, I'm considering getting this bundle (AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Six Core 4.2GHz, ASUS TUF GAMING B550M-PLUS (WI-FI) Motherboard CPU Bundle) + 16GB 3200MHz CL16 RAM. Total £324 after cashback. Benefits of B550 over Sandy bridge Z68: - PCIe 4.0 for future proof - USB 3.2 gen 2 for future proof - 2.5G for future proof - Wifi 6 I'll probably never use - extra RAM slots (currently 4x4GB, after upgrade 2x8GB) - M.2 NVMe storage - UFEI, my z68 was the very last old style BIOS - anything else? Would PCIe 2.0 on Sandybridge limit graphics speeds when I upgrade to second hand RTX 2080 or RTX 3070? Currently I don't think I even make full use of USB 3, only SD card reader uses USB 3. My home and NAS are all Gigabit ethernet, 2.5G is unlikely to be used for a while. I've no plan to use Wifi, but the bundle costs less than separately buying non-wifi version of same mobo. Is this worth the ~£200 cost after selling my existing it? Also, would my Windows 10 continue to work (after reactivation with new SN) or I need to set aside a few hours for a fresh install?
Just a pet peeve, could you just use the CPU model number, really saves me having to google which ones were sandybridge I just moved from a 6800k to a 3600, and its smoother. You'll se a speed bump in games, when you get a new GPU that 2600k/2700k will really be a bottleneck. My old 3570k bottlenecked my GTX1080. TBH all of the connection speed boost will have minimal impact, M.2 SSD's are hella fast, even coming form a 2.5" SSD for certain tasks. I did a fresh install, its always wise to with a chipset switch as drivers can get messy. So I'd suggest the same Remember, new boards also support RGB headers As for cost, I got a B450 board, 3600 and 16GB of much faster RGB RAM for £380 only last week (I couldn't wait unfortunately) and I don't regret it at all, even though it was more of a side step for me
I7/Z77 to 3600/B450 here - don't regret if for one second. Subjective view, everything seems a breeze rather than it running to straining point with my i7 (still got it but it's doing retirement level tasks). Certainly lets the 1080 stretch its legs more. And, personally, fresh gear - fresh install. @Bloody_Pete you need to update your sig
Yeah it won't be the speed of PCIE 2.0 that will slow your gaming it would be the CPU itself. The IPC really lacks.
Is there anything else in terms of CPU/mobo coming in the next 12 months that is worth waiting to futureproof? With B550, I'm hoping it'll last me another 5+ years with its PCIe 4.0 and USB 10 Gbps ports. Plan is doing something similar as my Sandybridge (sorry Pete, i5 2400 initially, now second hand i7 2700k). 3600 for now, 3900x or some high end 4000 when people sell up for the next latest and greatest. So I waited for B550 to come around. Thanks for your stories. i7/Z77 and 6800k are all newer than me, so my upgrade will be even larger. What is IPC? International Parking Community? Infrastructure protection centre? I kid, I kid. Instruction per cycle. So even at 4.6 GHz, it'll be slower than 4.2 Ghz Zen 2?
Nothing that would be noticable. The difference between B450 and B550 is negligable as it is! Its sure it will if you get a decent one. Maybe wait a week or so for reviews to come out so you can determine which are the ones to go for. Yeh, your current chip will be massively behind. Even more so with the spectre and meltdown patches eating away at performance.
I've read Bit-tech review on the Asus B550 board and other round-up reviews. I have looked at other motherboard, surprisingly some cheapest boards doesn't have USB 3.2 10Gbps A and C ports. I thought it's standard with B550 chipset? Unfortunately Asus isn't great at paying out cashbacks. There is a thread on OCuk forum with AMD graphics card £40 cashback promo by Asus. Promo was Nov 2019, by March and April some people received cashback, some are still chasing. Even without cashback, £325 for higher-mid-tier B550 board + 3600 is average price (£143 for 3600 at Currys eBay, £170 for this board w/o wifi, but zero chance of cashback). I don't want to go too cheap in case the CPU power delivery system struggles with future high end CPU. So I've placed my order, saved official Asus promo page and T&C locally, wish me luck! Hopefully i7 2700k + Gigabyte z68x-UD5 + 4x4GB DDR3 RAM + Asus D2X sound card can fetch close to £150
What I was referring to is not all boards VRM's are made equal. If you look at this handy doc not even all x570's can do all 3xxx series CPU's!

I'm waiting for 4th gen Ryzen. I've had my signature rig for 9 years (had a GPU upgrade in 2016). It still games OK for the games I play (X-Plane, Elite Dangerous, Train Sim & TS World) at 1600P. Even newer titles are OK if you're sensible with settings. People say you can't future proof a PC, and they're correct... but if you go mad when you build one, you certainly get your money's worth from it. This power hungry pile of ageing crap was literally bleeding edge when I built it. I've never spent so much on a PC prior to this, and I've never had one go so long without me having any great desire to build a new one. It's still quite capable... both games and productivity. I'm happy to wait and see what 4th gen Ryzen has to offer.
Totally agree, the more you spend, the more likely it'll still be okay years down the line. The massive overclock these early Intel Core CPU's can do also helps massively. Instead of spending a lot in one go, my plan will be same as my previous CPU: upgrade to a second hand top end expensive CPU when someone else goes for the next best thing. Replace the Ryzen 5 3600 with something like Ryzen 9 3900x or whatever high end in the 4000 series. At current point in time, to my knowledge, I think B550 has enough features to be futureproof. There can be more USB 3.2 gen2 ports, even a 2x2 would be nice, but other than that, I can't see anything on the horizon that will become must-have in 5+ years time. Please someone more knowledgable correct me. One huge negative though is lack of overclocking capability on these AMD's. It will last longer if one can overclock all cores to 5 GHz, like the good ol' days In related news. It's arriving today
I wouldn't worry about overclocking, like GPUs its all about boost algorithms, keep it cool, it will run faster for you.
The CPU's are tiered almost to perfection. Without overclocking, a 3600 is a 3600, can't get 3600XT performance without spending that extra money. In the good ol' days, One could overclock i7 2600k to beyond i7 2700k performance. I had overclocked my 8800 GTX to Ultra speeds. Who doesn't like free performance
It is ultimately somewhat of a blessing and a curse. Whilst you can't overclock it very far you do however get the most of the power and thermal headroom via boost algorithms (even if the headline single core boost is rarely seen in practice - note it will boost there just not in things like games etc). That said a lot of the fun has gone from chasing frequency and instead is now found delving into RAM and Infinity Fabric tweaks. Sounds like you have a nice combo coming.
I went from a i7 2700k, Asus P8P67 Pro, 16gb Ram to....Ryzen 5 3600, Asus B450 TUF gaming motherboard, 16gb RAM and it so much smoother especially when video editing. Makes a huge difference it really is a big jump
Similar upgrade I just did *high five* I ended up with 32GB RAM. They are A-Data single stick 16GB kit XMP rated at 3000 MHz CL16. Tested to be stable at 3400 MHz dual channel CL16 (exact same settings as XMP, except frequency). All that for just £104 On CPU overclocking, my 3600 is running with Precision Boost Overdrive +200 AutoOC. Pretty meh performance increase, slightly more than rounding error in benchmarks. I do miss days of just dialling CPU speed and getting 20-30% increase. Good ol’ Q6600 and i7 2000 days. Not only quicker when video editing and encoding, I was also playing Asgard’s Wrath VR game (very demanding) while video is being encoded, only noticed loading time became slightly longer.
A late update: I've finally received all cashback from Asus. £325 for r5 3600 CPU + Asus B550m TUF gaming Wifi mobo. Cashback of £40 for bundle, £25 for leaving a review of the mobo. I sold Horizon Zero Dawn from AMD on eBay for £30 with £1 FVF, so £29. So £231 for r5 3600 + mid-range B550.
