Anyone still doing this? My default is to look for NAS drives but for a system with 4-6 drives using two drive redundancy, is it really worth the extra cost?
The two main data drives in my server (a mirrored pair) were shucked from USB housings about eight years ago. Still going strong, according to the monthly SMART report the server emails me!
plenty are using shucked [pried from external enclosures] or not-nas-specific drives for nas... and for <8 bay enclosures you're probably fine...
All spinning rust is WD Gold here (both NAS and otherwise), consumer drives have let me down once too often.
I think the only drive greater than 1TB I've had issues with was one of my 8TB WD Reds, which was replaced under warranty - it didn't die, it just showed bad sectors. None of my shucked drives have ever given me problems - most of which have been 2, 4 and 6TB models.
I've got 6.57 years of uptime on my Seagate 4TB desktop drives, no errors and the NAS has a lovely green light next to each.
I used to... WD Green (EARS)... they ALL caused issues.. dropping off the RAID... and then dropping off the RAID during a RAID rebuild. Constant hassle. Never again. Currently using a mix of WD Red and Seagate Iron Wolf.... no issues with 24/7 operations for 2 years now.
