Bye bye anyone other than Merc winning. They have the highest power output and the best reliability, it's everyone else (but especially Honda) that relies on short duration boost modes. The Mercs will just run in no-quite-party-mode at all times and tell Lewis and Valterri to short shift, or they'll set the shifter lights differently. Either way, anything that restricts engine modes helps Mercedes. It might really help Racing Point and Williams. This reminds me of when they banned FRIC and the Mercs just went even faster.
Or we learn that 'party mode' was never a thing. Just a ruse by merc to distract from how fast they could go if they put their minds to it.
That would be equally impressive and scary. Im guessing this also means no turning down the engine to perserve it or fuel save or if you develop a problem and need to nurse it home
It all depends what they constitute an 'engine mode'... if fully charging the MU/KERS/Hybris/Whatever its called now requires a seperate engine mode, rather than simply 'don't press the go faster button' [assuming it's still driver deployable] then plodding round for a lap to recharge the batteries before giving it the full beans on the next lap may no longer be a thing. Basically if the FIA get their way, the 'strat' switch on the steering wheel is going bye bye along with anything that requires fiddling with that switch.
Only way I see the teams being able to deal with such a rule is: Turn up engine to 11 all the time Trust the drivers to lift and coast often enough to make the end of the race Because any team who doesn't do so will be too slow to overtake.
That’s the way I saw it as well Merc has the best most reliable engine, Honda and Ferrari and Renault really dont there highest max safe settings are a lot lower than merc just looking at a race day weekend where it’s usually 30 seconds + gap. Mercedes posted something a few years back saying in testing they ran the engine in full power mode for the 7 full race distances and was no issues FIA when trying to stop merc could actually help them lol
Merc are probably one of the few teams that can afford to just swallow engine reliability penalties, knowing their pace can mitigate any grid drops from extra engines [though not sure if/how the budget cap comes into play on that].
