Glad to see the Lancer there - basically sums up the awesomeness of the Gears of War Universe in a weapon. The Boltok deserves an honourable mention - after all, it cuts your average Locust in half :jawdrop:.

Truth be told, my memory's starting to fade on the best weapons. My two contenders would be:

    1) The Impact Hammer from Unreal Tournament 3: charge it up, then run around a close quarters map until someone is unlucky enough to be in your way.
    2) The Biorifle (also from UT3): charge it up, then land a huge gob of green slime on someone. Laugh maniacally as you know they are doomed, no matter what they do.

soon as i saw this article i rolled my eyes and thought "another listicle populated with stuff from halo and fortnite with a couple of token retro picks. They won't even remember the banana bomb". Glad to be wrong, I've been reading kotaku too much :s

still would have gone nail gun over shotgun for fear, both for it's awesomeness when you first get it and start decorating the walls and it's practicality against those armoured guys later in game - couple of slo mo shots to the head and boom.

    Anybody remember Armed and Dangerous?

The Landshark Launcher caused several hours of drunken teenage giggling back when it came out. As did the gravity bomb, you just screw it into the ground, hold on for dear life and...

    Oooh!

I'm going to suggest the Retro Lancer bayonet charge from Gears 3. Nailed (literally, I suppose). But unzipping Locust from behind with the chainsaw Lancer is one of my formative experiences, regardless of modernity of the game.
Also - Torque Bow and Halo Needler for similar reasons.
And I always went back to the pistols in Half-Life and Duke Nukem.
    Plus Duke's Pipe Bombs - #notyouraveragegrenade.

The way you describe the railgun in Q3/Qlive sounds like you only played instagib. In every other mode it is a weapon that does normal damage (100 per hit in Q3, 80 per hit in Qlive).

Also, you obviously never juggled another player with your lightning gun in Q3/Qlive/QChampions. THAT is satisfaction to the max.

Flat out agree with the initial sentiment, but then I saw the shotgun bit - WTF is THAT?! It certainly sounds like it deserves a place!

Yeah, definitely agree here. Ahead of its time.

The whaaaaaat? Again, sounds like it should have a place...

Serious Sam's cannon ball gun is by far the best weapon in any game.

It was one hit kill in Q2 multiplayer. I can't remember if the thing with railguns for arms in the campaign could kill you in one

At the most basic level, it's a grappling hook attached to the super shotgun that pulls you to an enemy to deal maximum damage.
At the least basic level, in combination with jumps and dashes its a way of launching you into the air and halfway across the map at incredible speed as you rain down carnage from above.

Well, yes and no. It does 100 damage in multiplayer, which CAN kill in one shot IF you don't have any armor.
In the campaign the enemy with the railgun does only kill you in one shot if you're at exactly or under 150 combined health + armor. Might differ a bit because of how armor absorption actually works in singleplayer. I'm not exactly sure on that. You can however do 300 damage (in singleplayer only, regular damage is 150), if you catch an enemy unawares.

It's easy to forget just how amazing Goldeneye's sniper rifle with it's zoomable scope(!) was at the time.

Just remembered the Grand Cannon from Red Alert 2. So overpowered that France was pretty much universally banned from online multiplayer

The weapons that stick in my memory, in rough order of experience...

    BFG - Doom
    Nail Gun - Quake
Ion Cannon - Command and Conquer
Obelisk of Light - Command and Conquer (the charging sound still makes me panic! @Paradigm Shifter )
Commando - Command and Conquer ("I've got a present for ya!" - honorary mention for Tanya in Red Alert series)
    Airstrike - Worms ("incoming!")
    Crowbar - Half-Life
    Magnum - Half-Life
    Flak Cannon - Unreal Tournament
    M90 shotgun - Halo 1
Plasma grenade - Halo 1 (when stuck to a grunt!)
    Gravity Gun / Saw blade combo - Half-Life 2
    Jackhammer shotgun - Far Cry
    Penetrator - F.E.A.R.
Grappling hook - Just Cause 2 (yeah, not really a weapon, but dang, its fun!)

I'm sure there are more, and some that come close (Mammoth Tanks in C&C, AK-101(?) in Battlefield 2) and others that stick in my memory for other reasons (the noise of a sub being launched by an opponent in Red Alert)
