I've used a screwdriver a billion times or more, doesn't mean I don't sometimes strip a head or drop the bleedin' thing.
More care, less speed Just imagine its all very delicate and super expensive prototypes! Thats what taught me, a few years of working around that kind of gear and I am very careful and delicate now! It only cost a few grand in destroyed equipment
I would feel confident in doing the teardown. I mean, many years ago, I stripped a £3.5K laptop on day one of it's arrival. It hasn't stopped me since. I have to say, I think the cooling looks pretty impressive on this console.
Have to agree - after taking the PS4 apart well into the 30th time to clear the dust from it, it's nice to see the removable parts making it easier to clean. I'm not sure if we will end up going down the PS5 route though... it's too goddamn big! Plus Games Pass seems like a winner even before the Xbox comes out!

That heat sink is something else! I'd be ok with the console size as long as it has good quality, quiet cooling! It was only the final revision of the PS4 that solved the noise and heat problems. Maybe PS5 will be good out of the gate in that respect?
All the people with preview units have commented on how quietly it runs with no spinning HDD and that enormous cooler. I suspect Sony's engineers took the complaints about the PS4 and it's turbine whine to heart when designing the PS5. The liquid metal TIM and the standard M.2 slot are the bits that are most interesting to me. I'd love to know how they got around the issue of pump out and aging for the TIM, although looking at it it could be as simple as a square of closed cell foam around the heat spreader to seal it against the heatsink. Since nobody is going to be taking off the cooler (within normal expected uuse cases) they can go for a permanent bonded seal there. Still, liquid metal in a games console, badass.
one thing that's not caught anyone's eye is the dust holes for vacuuming. i am so glad they added and are pointing this out this and works as intended the ps3 and ps4 both collected an insane amount of dust inside its not until you open them that realise how much dust wool they collected
Reading the above, it's seems a very thoughtfully designed console! I had missed the bit about it having a standard m.2 slot. Very nice given how the price of m2 drives has come down nicely. Lookin good so far.
Yup Gen3 M2s trade prices with SATA SSDs now, hence why I only want to buy M2 NVMe drives these days, Gen4s still command a premium, but by the time PS5 is a year or two old this should lessen, I am hoping the PS OS is sorted well enough that I can install PS4 titles to USB as I have a USB3 SATA SSD caddy and for PS4 there is negligible performance penalty using that vs an upgraded PS4 internal SSD drive (I have compared both on my PS4 pro) leaving the internal quick but small PS5 drive and M2 slot for PS5 games.
