I've been imaging a bunch of old CD-ROMs over the last couple of days, and one had an installer for AT&T's WorldNet - which came with a 640x480 tiled backdrop bitmap.

Quite fancied adding it to my collection, so...

...I recreated it as a 1920x1200 version to use as a wallpaper.

What was the problem and how did you fix it? :)

Use a dual-link DVI cable instead.

I honestly thought that the DisplayPort connector was the only one that supports the full resolution until @jinq-sea put me straight on that!

You know, I recall you mentioning that the DVI was single-link and being a bit confused!

I have no idea where I got that from, but I could swear I remember reading that the DVI ports have dual-link connectors but are only wired for single link. Clearly not!

I have discovered Window Maker, a modern (ish) interpretation of the classic NeXTSTEP desktop...

...and I *LOVE* it. Proper 90s computing, as it should be. Makes the Hipster Laptop feel like a classic, completely fits with the chunky styling and on-board trackball...

What are you using to image the CDs with? I’ve a load of old backups from years ago and some of the drives won’t read certain folders. Disks have seen better days to be fair, was hoping there was something that could work some magic?

I started just doing basic dd, but - like you - found a few marginal discs that just wouldn't play ball. So I switched to dvdisaster:

Not the fastest thing in the world, and the UI's a bit 90s, but it works a treat - you can see on that one a disk which was marginal managed to pull a clean image. It does resume, too, so if it can't read a disc the first time you can pull it out, give it a clean, and try again - it'll only try to rip the sectors that failed the first time around.

's no good for CDDA, you'll need something else to pull the audio tracks - but works a treat for data discs.

Unfortunately - or not, I dunno what OS you're using - it's only available for Linux and the BSDs these days. If you're on Windows, there's an older version here - it's only a few sub-versions older than the one I'm using on Linux, so it should work fine.

For audio I use Exact Audio Copy. It does a fine job, has powerful error correction and recovers data WMP misses altogether.

I was using something at the terminal to create BIN/CUE pairs from mixed-format discs... and I've completely forgotten what it was and how to use it. Whoops!

    EDIT:

Found it! It'd long since vanished from my bash history - I really need to carry on with the job, I've still a load of discs to go through - but the results of my "how the hell do I do this in Linux" searches were still in Firefox:

    Code:
    cdrdao read-cd --datafile image.bin --driver generic-mmc:0x20000 --device /dev/cdrom --read-raw image.toc
    toc2cue image.toc image.cue

First line rips to a BIN and a TOC, second converts the TOC to a CUE.
