    Morning all.

I've recently had a bit of a change around and have, for the first time in a long time, a big, long, heavy air-cooled GPU in my system. As such I'm thinking about the need for some form of GPU support. My research so far is as follows:

    Horizontal braces
I remain wholly unconvinced by these. I could be persuaded, however the main issue so far I'm finding is that they're not really long enough. My GPU is 330mm long and most of these seem to top out about 250mm. The longest I've found I think was a coolermaster one at about 300mm. The other issue is the thickness of my card - it's 3 slots, maybe even slightly more.

    Vertical braces
My card actually came with a vertical brace but it's so tall it hits the rad in the top of my case. I was then looking at shorter ones like these:

    or
    [IMG]

however again I'm unconvinced that these will stay in place over time - I can see them slipping downwards, negating the point of having them there.

    Finally I came across these:

    and
    [IMG]

which initially seemed perfect however, typically, the card hangs about 65mm from the bottom of the case :duh: I've thought about putting in something between the smaller one and the card but can't find anything that would really fit the bill - my modding-fu seems to be lacking somewhat...

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers

    GK

Length of wooden dowel or rigid plastic pipe cut to size and with anti-slip rubber glued top and bottom? Cheap, exactly the right size, no risk of any clever adjustment system failing. Paint it to colour-code it with your rig - or get really posh and pop some heatshrink on. Job dun.

A fair suggestion although I was hoping for something professional or at the very least something made by someone vaguely competent (i.e. not me). I will bear it in mind though as a last resort.

God, I hate YouTubers. A 14 minute 30 second video. It takes the guy ten and a half minutes to actually get to the point.: use bits of the PCI dust covers you removed to make a shim. He's finished a minute and a half later.

That could have been a sub-two-minute video. Better yet, it could have been a written article that took 15 seconds to scan for the solution - and which could have been indexed by search engines to make it easier for people to find the fix in the future.

(Nothing against you, @IanW, it's definitely a trick worth trying - I just... I hate YouTubers!)

    EDIT:
At least the thumbnail doesn't have the identikit open-mouth-wide-eyes-shocked-expression with finger-point-at-something-overlaid-on-top that every single god-damn channel seems to have. That's something, I guess.

How competent are you with building Lego's? ;)

For the horizontal support, even at just 250mm vs your 330mm card, it should adequately support the weight because it is longer than the central of mass of the card.

Now Lego is a solution that I like a lot - I hadn't considered that. Also even I (probably) couldn't bugger it up (much).

As for the horizontal braces - good point about the centre of mass, however it'd have to support it somehow between the 2nd and 3rd fans which may work but it'd be very close indeed. Maybe more of an option than I thought.

Edit: or I could build a Lego base for the shorter of the two vertical supports. Getting excited by this idea

Unfortunately thats been proven to drive traffic to videos, so it'll never go away!

And yeah, I loath videos like this, I has a mass purge of tech channel;s because so many are like this, and not even in an entertaining way!

Back on topic, fishing line from the top was always a fairly effective solution too

Subscribing, because I am also interested... Those Jonsbo things look pretty neat - I'll have to take a look at those.

*clicks video* *sees JayzTwoCents* *closes browser tab faster than you'd close a porn tab when you got caught*

I've had a visceral dislike of JayzTwoCents ever since he decided it'd be a good idea to drill through a motherboard to fit a cooler. Often people will show you the dumb AF mistakes just to show that everyone makes mistakes; but there's a huge difference between... say... accidentally killing an iMac while re-assembling it, and actively choosing to drill through a highly complex piece of electronics. To have that level of disregard for high-end stuff you've been given for free and publish a video to your massive audience about it absolutely boils my piss.

F*** me! I find it hard to believe anybody could be that stupid. There is no way you can be sure of missing all the tracks on a multilayer PCB. :duh::duh::duh:

Now this may be controversial but I like Jay. I do get the point however that he spends a lot of that video not doing anything. Dear god I hate the OTT youtube thumbnails however...

On topic: I've just ordered some lego parts from bricklink which hopefully will do the business in terms of creating a little stand. Somewhere I'm sure I've got some neoprene rubber sheet which I think could work in terms of creating a non-slip surface top and / or bottom. The support itself will be here tomorrow :)

Burn the heretic! We want our news and reviews via the written word not via this new fangled movey-talky-inane-babble-picture medium!
    :hehe::lol:

On topic, watching this thread with interest. I've been thinking about something similar myself.

And even better we want our computer related news sent in the post on actual paper and not even on a computer!

I'm still gutted that Computer Shopper shut its doors before I ever got to write for it, even if it was a thin shadow of its former phone-book-like self in its later years.

At least I got a few cover features on Micro Mart!

The support has arrived and it's really teeny. The dimensions on Amazon don't really do justice as to how small it is - fully retracted it's the size of the final section of my little finger  Feels remarkably strong though - even with it extended to it's fullest there isn't any wobble and it doesn't feel like it would move even under a lot of weight - I'm pinching it as hard as I can for example and it's not budging even a mm. Now just need the lego to arrive

At risk of going off topic I think I saw one of the worst examples of this recently on my "suggested" feed. It was from some Youtuber (I recognize him but not the channel name - and I can't remember that..) who was holding a GPU with a NVME to PCI-E adaptor going into a PS5 with a stupid surprised look on his face and text overlaid to the effect of "will it work?"...

Well, no it won't. But let's make a 8+ minute long video to get the clicks and monetisation in...

    **** off!

    Anyway, back on topic.. :hehe:

Support sounds interesting although I would probably just go for the DiY route myself.

    Need pics though.

I could have actually been helpful.:duh: I made my gpu support from aluminium angle, glued into a square tube, with some insulation on ot. you could just get square alu tube, I just happened to have the angle to hand.

Lego arrived today and here it is in all its glory - a build to rival any of those from @Pete J

The reason for black and pink and blue transparent is that my lighting is cyan and magenta throughout with black, grey and white hardware - a sort of Vaporware effect (ish)

    Here it is installed:

Small and understated but rock solid. Perfect
