Guide Simple Lighted Fan Mod

    A very simple mod but I thought Id share how I lighted my fans.

    I found some fairly cheap Blue 3.6v 3mm 4000mcd leds, which I sanded the tips off. To keep the mod simple, I had 5 fans to do and didnt partically fancy messing around with a lot of soldering (as i lack those skills) I decided to wire 4 in series, meaning each LED would get about 3v, so there would be no need to use resistors.

    So I just drilled 4 holes around, the LEDs fitted snuggly into them, weird them in series in parellel with the fans power.

    Now another 3 to do when more LEDs arrive, Something to do about the PSU and to tidy cables...

    I did not know you could sand the tops off the LEDs. Cool.

    ...as long as it's only the plastic dome that you take off, and not go down to the metal ....

    Filing the tops would diffuse the light, as well as avoiding the fan blades from touching any protruding part of the LED ;)

    yes, it's very economical. a while back i bought 6 clear fans at frozen cpu (for $3, comes with 3-4 pin molex adapter, screws, and grille), and i've been meaning to do this. :dremel:

    Can you clear this bit up please? Unless of course you used 4 LEDs with two sets of two in series, joined together in parallel.

    Basicly he's saying that he connected up 4 LED's positive to negative, and conducted the current as thus:


    positive in+ <--> -LED1+ <--> -LED2+ <--> -LED3+ <--> -LED4+ <--> negative out-

    need help on this

    i'm using the same type of connection with the same type of no. of LED... the only difference is my LEDs runs at 1.5V.... A single LED bulb consist of a 400ohm resistance... please help me... Its color now is blue green, coz it runs at 3v... I can't figure out how much resistance will i add on the connection....

    i made this for my fans... only problem is my led's become dimmer if i lower the voltage to 7... so i seperated the ground of the fan and the ground of the leds... now there both sharing the 12v positive... when my fans are on 7v the leds are bright.. but when i switch it to 12v , my leds become dimmer? can somebody please tell me whhy they do that and what sould i do to the connections...

    If you have a metal case and don't mind a little extra work, you can light an ordinary (non-transparent) fan. Just take off the blades as shown in the relevant guide, and spray them in a metallic colour. If you then follow this guide, you can make a fan that sometimes looks even better than a transparent one.

    Hey, I should of been clear with the original post, sorry about that only meant this as a quick guide :)

    I had bought the clear fans over a year ago, when led fans had just came out and were rather pricey, im not exactly sure where i got them from now but at the time they were £2.50 each compared to the lighted ones at £9.99.

    Both clear fans and clear fans with LEDs have dropped in price a lot now, so im not sure how much actual money you would be saving. But especially if you have fans already its worth doing. Even normal fans painted silver or white with leds in look great. A friend has done this so sorry no pics :)

    Plus you get more satisfaction from doing it yourself than all 5 minutes of fitting preledded fans :)

    great!!! :clap: i only have those kind of fans... i've seen a fan whose truly made of metal.... i would like to buy it but how the f**** can i drill that :lol: .. does a silver color work to? coz u did use a copper like...

    i'm having a problem with this kind of connection... a bulb always get burned out... what do you think is wrong? :waah: :grr: :wallbash:
