Wow at the responses! I was blown away by my new powerbook, compared to the older Ti book (now sold) it was like such a great step up. Then I unpack the G5 out of the box and woah! Processing power is sweeet, and I this will be connected to a Syncmaster arriving tomorrow from Singapore via DVI. For all you Mac haters you should see how the superdrive tray pops out, its so nice! This one in particular will be used in the office, while also playing the role of a server. I plan to purchase an Airport Extreme card and I will probably bump the ram up later on - hell I might try that now Will report back later! edit: You might remember that I purchased some ram in Singapore, well 2x 256MB sticks of Corsair XMS3200LL ram infact. I got this for the OfficeBox but I opened it up today and it only takes 133Mhz SDRAM.....so the spect of the G5 is as follows: Hardware Overview: Machine Model: Power Mac G5 CPU Type: PowerPC 970 (2.2) Number Of CPUs: 1 CPU Speed: 1.6 GHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB Memory: 768 MB Bus Speed: 800 MHz Boot ROM Version: 5.14f0 More than the 512MB I wanted, not too bad though as the extra 256 is what came stock! Will update once this is moved to the new setup @ the office
Superdrive Video Clip Bah!..Evil people Click here to download a 300KB QuickTime video clip of the Superdrive in action
we have them at college, we only have 12 of them tho lol. They are amazing pieces of kit, im nearly thinking of selling my pc and getting one The G5's are amaing for photoshop and final cut pro. BTW if you get/got photoshop 7, make sure you get the G5 Update for it, so it makes use of the 64bitness
Agreed. Not sure about the powerbook though. I would like a Mac G5... Although I'd like to put it beside one of the machines that my school has and see which is best... my school invested in 10 P4 Machines - 2.8GHz, 800FSB, 120GB 7200RPM HDD, 1GB 2700DDR, MatroxRTX.10, Matrox G550 DualHead, DVD+/-RW, CD-RW, 21" monitor - f00king amazing video editing power. Excellent machines. The last experience I had editing on a mac was not a pretty one
Video editing on the Mac is one of the easiest things on the planet, if you are using iMovie. Ofcourse if you go to play with Final Cut Express/Pro you better know what you are doing Technicallly Macs ARE PCs. PC = Personal Computer, and the Mac is just that, but I do know what you guys mean (hell what do we call 'normal' comps then?) As for Powerbooks, I would never own a wintel laptop ever again as these are amazing, specially the new Alu pbooks. Hang on though as there is a G5 pbook comming out this year (I think) or next! Getting the new 'L' table for the G5 tomorrow, and will be rewamping the Office as well, will post back when I have piccies!
perhaps a mobile A64 based laptop would perform on par with that? after all they are both 64 bit chips ( if microsoft gets its friggin act together and stops screwing over AMD by holding out on windows 64 bit)
And btw, allthough I do like apple computers in general, I just thought I would point out the non-apple side of the arguement: all the computers in Jurrasic Park that shut down and failed, we're apple
Then again they did bring back Dinosaurs from extinction... and put them in a park... which they were able to break out of... I still make lo-Er. Use my G4 over my PC for everything but gaming and the occaisonal bout of AutoCAD/Java for school
I distinctly remember the girl in JP going ,"its unix , i know this" (or somat like that) and then doing some weird crap in some ****e 3d App. so even if the comps were apple, its bound to be unix's fault....
"It's Unix. I know this." is almost a sure-fire way to get your *** cooked by any computer. They know when you think you're smarter than them, after all.
lols. This is direct from the script... OVER AT THE COMPUTER, Lex slides quickly into the command chair at Nedry's terminal. She stares at the screen for a moment - - LEX This is a Unix system. I know this. It's the files for the whole park. It's like a phone book - -it tells you everything. - - and then her fingers start to fly over the keyboard. Tim watches, amazed, as the computer starts to respond to Lex's commands i like the last bit. Tim seems amazed that the keyboard controls the computer? + is it just me or soes the last two sentences read a bit like a cheesy erotic novel
