I hear that stuff has a short lifespan, and that the power supply for it makes an annoying constant high-pitched sound.

Quite a few people have put string behind the grill, so its certainly do-able.

Thats good to hear. Are they molex powered?

  6. Yes, but my firend used red el wire and it is very dim, like a faint red. If your catholds then it wont be visable, but if you have no lighting it shows up alright.

El wire is not made to light anything up expect itself. It emits almost no light onto anything else but it does glow a decent amount.
If you want lighting behing the grill of a dragon, buy LED fans

I've gotta red/blue akasa one, but it gives out basically no light... run it on ~7v but theres pretty much no difference between that and 12v.
what about the blue wire, is that any brighter..>?

the pic in this thread (http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=49745) shows some EL wire and it doesnt look too bad.....

Ive used El wire on many mods and the guy who said they have a short lifespan is right. Also if you have speakers or anything of the sort within about 5feet of the wire (even a phone) the El wire causes them to emmit a high pitched squeeling noise.

edit: yes some are molex powered
