"An unprecedented approach to video game play-holding two separate game screens in the palm of your hands - hits the scene later this year when Nintendo introduces a new portable game system, code-named Nintendo DS."

Although this new hand held thing doesn't sound like their best idea.

Don't get me wrong, I am a massive Nintendo fan (I love my Gamecube and also owned an N64 before that), but I think that they are going to suffer a very serious beating at the hands of the Playstation Portable in the handheld market. I completely agree with Lord Kordir and his comment about Nintendo's supremacy in the area of gameplay, however sadly that's not what the games industry is about nowadays; marketing and image is playing an increasing role, with innovation and gameplay often taking a back seat. I suppose it could be argued that this importance of marketing has always existed within the industry, right back to the era of the great SNES vs Megadrive battle, though I would argue that its detrimental effects have become worse in recent years (the demise of the Dreamcast is a good example of this).

I don't think that the DS will be a complete disaster, as Nintendo have enough of a reputation from the previous incarnations of the Game Boy to ensure that the sales aren't terrible. However, remember what happened with the original PlayStation; the N64 didn't fare too badly against that (aside from some poor initial sales due to some pretty ridiculous pricing *cough* £60 a game *cough*), then the PlayStation 2 absolutely destroyed the GC in terms of sales. I think we may well see a repeat of this in the portable market, with Sony taking a generation or so to get their act together before becoming the dominant player. Don't forget that unlike with the original PlayStation, Sony have already established themselves as serious contenders within the industry as a whole.

Have you heard what the DS can do? Stylus operated touch screen. Voice commands with a microphone. Wi-Fi too, and you can put it on your LAN and possibly play people across the net.
