    hey
I'm thinking of using a mini-itx board for my router running IPCop on it.

Has anyone used there mini-itx boards for servers of any type?
I know people have just wanted to know peoples views on doing so.

I like it for its low noise and low power

I've used an EPIA-CL for a network file (well mp3 and backups) and print server in the past, was always very happy with it.

I do the same thing, only with an EPIA 5000. Runs XP fine on 320Mb ram and a 60Gb HDD. You don't really need a vast amount of power (the 5000 is only 533Mhz) when you're doing this sort of stuff.

My mate is running his smoothwall on a CL6000 - not because he needs the umph, but the board has two built in 10/100 ports.

make sure youve got at least 512meg of mem thats all i say. The performance difference between 256 and 512 is incredible.

hmm I still haven't decided what to do.

I would like to put IPcop on an mini-itx or my old gateway 450mhz but its the thought of leaving it on all the time.

    Oh what to do

ITX all the way - I was running an old Gateway Celery 366 as my server, and the noise was just unbareable. ITX server = Zero noise (well, apart from the odd click as the drive gets accessed).

Go on - the dark (mini) side is calling you... ;)

:grr: I know its does now stop it! Stop making me think of the wonderful case I could make for it and how cool it would look in my room.

odd click from the harddrive? not when I would use a CF card for IPcop

    noo stop it.

How much power do they use? Compared to a stand alone router?

    EPIA Power calculator.

I had a problem with my EPIA board and IPCop detecting the NIC. But the board is a first gen Eden, so that may have had something to do with it. And the conversion from air to water to air plus a few other little odds and ends probably didn't help it none neither.

I just looked at the router here at work... 60 watts. Cripes. Opposed to 10.4 Watts for a much more powerful unit.

with adding a flash disk and usb device its goes up to 12.55 watts using a EPIA 5000. :thumb:

Fronzel are the routers at your work bigger than a normal home router? I think I will probally go to the IPcop route but its the cost of the mobo.

I'm sure I could probally pick everythign up second hand.

Not really. They are Comconnect 12 port 10/100 enterprise switches. Natrually, being run in an 10megabit mode. Because our IT department rides the short bus.
