Probably an easy answer to this Im looking upgrade my CPU. So what do I buy the Athlon 2800+ with the ThouroughBred (2.25Ghz) or the Barton core (2.08Ghz)?? I have noticed the Barton has a higer L2 cache over the thouroughbred however the ThouroughBred has a higher multiplyer... Im a bit lost which should i go for?? also Im looking at getting a new HSF for this any reccomendations to provide me with some overclocking oppurtunities?? Thanks
Clock for clock it would have to be the Barton, but as you state the T-Bred has a higher clock. I'd still go for the Barton, and as both will overclock to similar speeds you will see a greater boost with the Barton's larger L2.
Thanks guys Im gonna either get the 2800+ Barton or the 3000+ Barton. Ive been looking at water cooling instead of a HSF and found this kit http://web6.scan.co.uk/Products/Info.asp?WPID=60320, is it worth paying the extra money for this?? The kit just seems a bit cheap for watercooling, and as sound isnt really an issue would it be justified for the extra cooling and overclockability. Thanks
Yeh they sell them here http://web6.scan.co.uk/Products/Info.asp?WPID=81834 very cheap too I might add.
save sum time, effort and trouble and go over to cpucity and buy and unlocked barton xp2500+ these will clock straight to a xp3200+ with most motherboards (have to have 400fbs natch)
That kit doesn't perform much better than a decent HSF really, the only real difference is its quieter. If your gonna go watercooling do it decently with a quality set of components.
Cool thanks I'll check it out. I think I'll get this :- http://www.cpucitystore.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=71 or http://www.cpucitystore.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=392 Unless Im missing something the 2800+ unlocked would be an amazingly good purchase over the 2500+ what kind of speeds would I be looking at with this at 400FSB??
Eh, I think unlocked cpu's are overrated... My barton came locked at 11x, and I keep my clock at 191mhz, hence a 2.1GHz speed.. no probs at all, it's as stable as it could ever be, I've tried 200mhz, but I believe that it doesn't have enough voltage (wouldn't boot into windows), but I don't care to adjust it, 2.1ghz is perfectly fine for anyone (IE: I really don't think it's worth paying extra for a mobile 2500+ just for the multiplier being unlocked) Pick a barton
If you want to get the max out of your FSB, and in turn your memory bus you need to be able to adjust the multi. Its also good for stressing either the CPU/mobo but not RAM or RAM/mobo but not CPU to figure out where the weaknesses lie. 10*210 will perform better than 11*191 at the same memory timings and memory bus speed due to the extra memory bandwidth.
Ive ordered the Barton 2800+ unlocked from cpu city which I hope to run at 10x200 which should produce a speed similar to the barton 3200+ with my cosair memory I have ordered, at a bargain price
Indeed, I was mearly pointing out the advantages of an unlocked multi to Mace. BTW, if you run at 11*200 that will be the default speed of a 3200+ @ 2.2Ghz, not 10*200 which is 2.0Ghz.
Sorry fivecheebs I wasnt disagreeing I didnt mean to add your quote in there just forgot to remove it. thanks for clearing up the multiplier settings I will need.
