Alright i just though of this project this morning and got started asap. Its basically my lan box that is made out of wood and it must be silence. The cpu will be watercooling and the case will have nosie dampening stuff inside the case to reduce nois as much as possible. Unfortuently i don't really want to have a backplate for the motherboard because i want a decent amount of airflow. System Specs: CPU: 1800+ or Duron 1800+ About 70 bucks Motherboard: BIOSTAR M7VIZ Motherboard VIA KM400 + VT8237 Chipset INTEGRATED VIDEO AUSIO and LAN - Price $ 89 Memory: MUSHKIN 512meg DDR333 BLACK LINE Hi Performance LEVEL2, Rated 2-2-2, 6 Layer PCB with Heatspreader Price $ 149 Hard Drive: Western Digital 120 gig 7200rpm 8meg Cache JB with Data-Lifeguard ATA-100 Price $ 139 PSU: Vantec ION 400Watt $118.00 Cooling: Revision 3 VGA Silencer $32.00 ZM-NB47J $10.00 2x Zalman 80x80x25mm fan, comes with 4 screws and inline resistor to reduce the speed of the fan, Normal mode: 36.5 CFM 34.2dB(A) 3000rpm. Noiseless mode (using resistor): 20.6 CFM, 20 dB(A), 1700rpm, $ 10 each Why no video card, well im gonna use my current one instead.
First Update Today i set out just to get the base of the case completed. So i went looking in the workshop for some decent wood and found a nice base which needed to be cut. I marked out my dimension needed and glued some nois dampening sheets on. Then i test fitted everything except mobo, cpu etc. Overall Heatercore Hard Drive Foam Silencer Cd-rom Foam Silencer PSU and Where My heto 2800 pump will go The height of the case Also my watercooling setup follows: Heatercore out of a Commodore Boris CPU waterblock Heto 2800 silenced
Yer im not sure what else i could do to dampen the sound of the hard drive without it whining at me because its a) too hot and b) its loud. Got any suggestion?
haha yeah you might want to get a thermal probe and see how warm your hard drive gets like that after a defrag, it it gets past 60 C your in trouble A similar thing happened to me I bought two silent drive enclosures, my WD 120 GB was fine but my !@) GB maxtor drive was over heating, so i wasnt able to enclose it. You might want to get an aluminum plate to work like a heatsink ( that kinda how the silent drive does it) best of luck, if you have any questions about sound proofing/sound dampening/sound absorbing Im your man
Watercoole Hard Drive Designs Alright i've looked through the ocau Water Cooling section and found some nice cooling units for hard drives. What ones do you reckon would work better? #1 http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/pippin88/blocks/hdd.jpg http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/pippin88/blocks/hdd1.jpg #2 http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~peterwayne/images/OCAU/Hdd/hdd1.jpg http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~peterwayne/images/OCAU/Hdd/hdd2.jpg http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~peterwayne/images/OCAU/Hdd/hdd3.jpg http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~peterwayne/images/OCAU/Hdd/hdd4.jpg http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~peterwayne/images/OCAU/Hdd/hdd5.jpg IMHO the second one looks much easier to make. Also i've tried to compress the pics and i've got some thin wood to finish the case tommorow.
Out of curiosity, why does it have to be so quite? And if you wanna see a crazy quite watercooled computer, just take a look at this, http://www.mashie.org/casemods/y2k01.html It is a completely watercooled computer running off of only one 120mm fan, very cool case i must say. But I'm digressing again
Look at this project in BladeRunner site, www.zerofanzone.co.uk. I would try to build a complete enclosure for the hard disk having this kind of watercooling plate as one of its bigger sides; i would use aluminum for the non water cooling sides of the box.
