one of the guys at work, who is infact one of our tier 2 guys, tried to hotswap his video card. and people wonder why tech support is so bad.
How could anyone think that was a good idea? Of course, they probably think we're nuts too. Imagine what we look like to the uneducated outsider. We take a $1000 (on average) peice of equipment and spend hundereds more cutting it, welding it, glueing it, lighting it, glassing it, stealthing it, and whatever else our twistedminds can come up with. I thought it was insane too, before I tripped and fell in.
Wish I had the guts to be a modder.... The closest I came to modding was cutting some plastic off a fan because I had to get it to fit in a case that needed a cradle for the fan, which I didn't have.
ric, think of it this way. while yes, you are modding the whole computer, if you screw up and break something, you only need to replace that one thing, not the whole computer. and if you stick to just modding the case, the risk to the guts is minimal.
Thats not possible as you would have to unplug the monitor to get the card out of the slot - the monitor cable/plug wouldnt allow it out of the slot. Im guessing he means he swapped the card with the PC on......
Its possible. WHen i take out my gfx card i always forget and have to hold the card in mid air while unscrewing the plug from it
Same here - happens everyime. Let me clarify. If would not be possible to hotswap the card while its connected to the monitor because somewhere in the process you would have to disconnect the monitor cable to get the card completely out of the PC.
^^ Well if some how you remembered to uplug the monitor how is it you would forget to turn off the PC to take out the vid card?
I've hotswapped RAM and hard-drives by accident before. Completely messed up the HDD but the RAM was fine, although it chrashed my system obviously
